What if the internet had it's own government or representation?

I think this would be interesting. All problems that exist in the physical realm are also in the cyber realm. A government of the internet could defend and represent itself, could it not? In a way, this could be a way to truly represent the people. What if we could elect people on the internet to create policies for the internet. For example, child pornography lovers...As far as I know, they've only used their computer to do anything, but it could be seen as a crime on the web, and could be handled by "superhero hackers" of the internet. The internet is almost a nation by itself. The internet is the only place I see where a true democracy exist with such a large population. "Could there be a way to handle issues in international politics with this method?" is now my new question.

I'd rather it didn't, it's just another group of people who could be bought by lobbyists and politicians. They'd be selling our free speech in no time

Agreed.
We have enough on our hands keeping an eye on our current "representatives".
The less the better in this case.

If it did , you can guarantee they would be owned and controlled by the American gov, then America would use this to squeeze the rights out of everyone on a global scale untill America is the backbone of the planet .

Why doesnt NATO wag its finger at America ? Invading countries , robbing oil , lithium , opium , slaughtering innocents all over the globe ........ and Iran is being told off for thinking about nuclear capabilities ? The corruption has spread alot further than American borders.

Looking at the state of the world today ... if you dont laugh you`ll cry.

The initial concept of the internet was a place for free expression. For free exchange of ideas between peers. For freedom from restrictions of the government. ..At least that's what Al Gore told me when he invented it....

But I guess Kris Kristofferson paraphrased by Janice Joplin were right after all.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.
Nothin' don't mean nothin' hon if it ain't free.

Keep ANY FORM of government or restriction out of the internet. True actual pirating for profit of video or recorded media is a little different, but free speech, free expression, free ideas...aren't worth the bandwidth they take up if they aren't free.

This is freedom here:

Give credit where credit is due, but keep government or anything but freedom out of the last bastion of freedom most of the world has left...the internet.

what a nightmare !!! much prefer the anarchy of the web over a world strangled by government regulations.

Not only would it be inevitably corrupt in the end, but slightly retarded as well. I mean, just imagine for a moment what a Congressional session of the internet would be like.

The Internet's representation is the human race itself.

I feel the internet may be our only savior from the evils that government has wrought for countless millenia...the "serf's" finally have a collective voice and gathering place, this just may be our time...finally.
