And all of those are free to use applications that FARM your data.....

Its the same as facebook
How is facebook a multi-million dollar industry, yet they offer a free service?

Sell our info.

Im sure they charge to advertise also... just sayin not defending... I got rid of FB a while back... Guess ill sever ties with Google too. Like it matters. Big Brother is everywhere. T

This could be a ploy too. Like the one that took out MySpace for FB. Who knows. I just find it odd that in a competitive market, like the one that Google is in and with the current SOPA hoopla that Google would announce or do this. My buck fifty on the matter

Check out this young company in Atlanta. F3 Technologies. (FTCH) It's doing that right now and have contract with Ditto.

It's for Films and Music and Book (including Text Book) and Tubes. www.FargoTube.com

It's cloud based. This could be a golden opportunity for investors especially it's not run by Google who will track what you watch and so on starting in March.

I posted this on the other thread about Megaupload shut down as well. We need alternative from Google/Youtube

Wow! It is really amazing to see just how many people are STILL looking for an online alternative to Google instead of investing their time and money in tomes!

This is not only sad, it is pathetic as h3ll!!

You people have yet to learn about how data mining works I see or else you would be suggesting book outlets and book warehouses to obtain your information from.

Here is a little jewel for all of you people who cannot do without the internet or who are suffering from internet-symbiosis....

Your precious internet was once only a mental scheme drawn on PAPER before it became the all intrusive entity that it is today.

I know it is hard to believe but that is the truth.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I can see that this is disturbing news for most people even though the responses vary from "I had no idea!" to "How could you have not known?"

I'm somewhere in the middle as I have always known of these internet policies but I just never seemed to care since the worse I have ever done was use free file sharing services even though I stopped that a while ago. All the recent news about the internet has flipped a switch in my brain where I can no longer ignore the methods they use. As other members have pointed out, seeking alternatives is rather pointless unless you're willing to drastically change your internet habits which includes no longer using your favorite free services.

I guess if you can't beat them, you might as well join them

Google, I would like to see the data about me that you have accumulated over the years

T B Lee at TED conference on putting our data online

www.ted.com...

haha in this interview the guy asks him if he's a socialist since he put the Web into the public domain. He replies that he had to do it that way or it wouldn't work

These changes are all part of Internet 2.0.

You will either comply and be data mined

or

be excluded from ALL USAGE.

screw google, you can opt out entirely. Don't use them at all, avoid anything to do with them, if enough people (sigh I know, dreaming right?) did that, the amount of revenue they'd lose alone would make them reconsider such atrocious behaviour.

I guess, an anti-occupy of google.. lol.. leave the beast to starve, and you'll see it's just a tiny rabbit with a big shadow..

Okay, so even if you use a different search engine, if you access those google sites, which many of us do, you can also be traced? After watching tru tv and the forensics involved with data recovery on computers and cell phones etc, I don't think anything is a secret anymore.

Not "can"----"will." Unless you're taking expert steps to keep your data anonymous, every single thing you do on the internet----Google-affiliated or not----is traceable. It has been for a very, very, very long time. The only difference is now you *have* to give something back to Google for their services---eg; reasonably anonymous marketing data.

When you try to access most google sites using a proxy it doesnt let you continue, it says there is an authorization error.

I dont believe for a second that they dont use the information they collect in a way that we wouldnt want them to.

Have you tried startpage.com...

Hover your mouse over 'Details' just to the right of the search box. All searches are encrypted and they have a free proxy for every search result. I have been using it for a long while now.

I will continue to use an android phone, google+, gmail, google maps, etc.

I don't mind, none of my information is on there anyway, its not that had to make a fake name, address, and phone number. They can't pull your information from a credit card either because anyway to make that work would fail credit card compliance, which is against the law, so legally if they caught you doing something through a credit card, the case would be thrown out in court.

If you don't like it, don't use it, don't whine and bitch.

Google is certainly lame.

Don't think the police state can't intercept all of your emails, phone calls etc. (and does) anyway.

It's funny but there's no point in stopping the use of google products.

All your internet, phone calls, emails, txts, sms, voip and internet search/data -can be and is monitored for the most of us, if not you yet, it will be very soon. All the ISP's have these systems specifically dedicated to these tasks.

This has been going on for the past 5 years.

And I'm not talking about anonymous data, i'm talking carbon copies of txts, emails, data and voice recordings. Data that can specifically harm and be traced back to you.

Does it suck? Yes it sucks, badly. But there is literally nothing we can do.
Now, Google may very well be on the forefront of these types of practices, however, they are hardly the ones you need to worry about, it's the phone companies and ISP's where you should be focusing your attention to.

So, if you have anything sensitive you need to relay, do it through post.
I am not making this up folks, I have a family member for a (major) Technology/Computer manufacturing company that was on the IT security team designing these systems. They are already deployed.

Well all of you in this thread are correct. Working for the RAAF for 10 years has shown me this. The Australian government knows everybody's I.P. and your Mobile telephone text,s, just how does that Damn government, record certain ones for trial hearings. I heard the most stupid thing two years ago in Washington D.C. Some congressman had a police scanner and just happened to pick up a mobile phone call by accident of one of his rivals. How can that Bull# be? We are not allowed Police scanners in Australia. This surveillance has been going on for years. It has been a known fact here that Zukkerburg and his bloody Facebook empire contributes to your Central intelligence agency. Get a new laptop and register it in Russian when you go there on holidays. Use a name out of the Russian phone and never ever use Gmail or watch you tube and even though Bing is in on this scam use that if need be.

How so manny teenagers got Gmail know full well, every and I mean every emall is saved on there forever. Stupid kids. Yea, I had youtube accounts and such years back. But those days are gone. Using a screen name is stupid also. All of these screen names on ATS are useless why the United States Government enjoys your Data base. You have a religious group in your state of Pennsylvania called the Amish. They got the right idea.
