What a strange thread? The real story should be that Ford is hiring and not only that, you don't have to be a third generation Union crone to get one of the jobs.

I'm actually sickened some are using it to bash America, completely ignoring the fact that most of us are still doing fine. Yes the unemployment level is way to high and that is a horrible thing. That only involves a small part of us however.

Standing in a three block line to get a job is hardly a horrible thing, unless a person is so pitiful that their not willing to do that to get a great job. Why would anyone want to give a high paying job to somebody who would whine about that? Why bother with them as they would likely be lousy workers anyway.

The real question is why is the line so short? When I was about 20 I stood on line at a Union Pacific office for almost 20 hours just for a chance to apply for a job that paid twice what most jobs paid at the time. I ended up actually enjoying it and met some very nice, highly motivated people in line with me. We even helped each other by holding places so we could run over to a bathroom. We had no cell phones back in the dark ages of my youth, so we could not call friends to bring us things like these folks can.

I'm sure the mature adults in that line, those who would be worth hiring, were glad to stand there for that chance. Complainers and whiners make horrible employees anyway. They usually quit or have to be fired. They are better off in their parents basement to punish their parents for raising them to be complainers and whiners

A sure sign of things to come, no doubt. Whats the nations current percentage of unemployed?
I couldn't help but note that on almost all videos related to this one, there was mention of Ron Paul in the top comments from people praying for an instant fix...

Unemployment is around 8.5%. The true rate is likely around 5% higher than that.

Historically when times are good, around 4.5% are still unemployed even though there are plenty of jobs so that more or less negates the hidden unemployed.

I'm guessing your really in Australia? Most of us here are doing just fine. The costs of food and fuel are hurting us a bit and our dollars are worth less, but around 80% of us are pretty much untouched by the economic troubles beyond the higher prices. The most issues are in the most Left leaning States. Right leaning States are doing far better. Alaska, Texas, North Dakota and some others are doing just fine.

It tends to bother me when whiny childish Americans exaggerate and even lie to make the US look worse than it is. Please don't judge us by them or the political madness at national election time. Reality is not quite what your hearing now.

You live in la la land.

Not even in the Great Depression were Postal Employees getting fired and Post Offices closed.
2005 BRAC to close more military bases and have a few undermanned cheaply ran joint-military bases....

America's hurting. 'Careers' is a word most Americans no longer recognize. Ain't no jobs in the US of A.

The money's being spent in the former Soviet Territories. Congress gave mega Billions to the former Soviet Territory Georgia, to build +130 Hospitals.

What State do you live in to think "80% of America is fine"??????????????????

I agree 100% on that.

I tried to explain a few times here on ATS why we have low unemployment and economic growth over here despite the crisis and paying a #load of money to Brussels... but people just dismissed it as socialism.
Well, you can call it socialism all day long (which it isn't!) ... the numbers don't care.
Drop the ideological BS and take a pragmatic look at the numbers.

Look. what. works. people. period. Or don't, I don't care... suit yourself.

TRY AND TELL THAT TO THE PEOPLE IN THIS VIDEO, NEWT, YOU OUT-OF-TOUCH, NEO-FASCIST, CAPITALIST, ELITE PIECE OF CRAP. PEOPLE OF ALL COLORS WANT JOBS, AND YOUR PRO-RICH/ANTI-POOR/RACIST RIGHT-WING POLICIES HAVE CRIPPLED AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES AS WELL AS OTHER POOR/WORKING-CLASS PEOPLE.

the saddest part is yet to come. when they are hired, they stand in front of the same machine day in and day out for 8-12 hrs a day.

sometimes for 6 days a week, because the greedy imbeciles who run the show save money by overworking employees, even with overtime.

stale air, no natural light, harmful fumes from plastic, paint and metal.

then only a minutes warning to getting laid off because ford's latest car is sh-t, and they always run at a loss because their main source of revenue is government bailouts.

if i was one of them, i would be selling hotdogs to the people in line. you'd make more in one day than working there a month.

edit on 22-1-2012 by randomname because: (no reason given)

you have no idea what youre talking about do you?

ford didnt even take any bailouts.

and what do you expect those people to do? sit at home waiting for the government to bail them out constantly? the job may suck, but it is a payed job and they are working and that is much better than nothing. are YOU going to bail them out?

and yeah, how dare those greedy imbeciles run a company that hires people. HOW DARE THEY!!!

unless you are going to hire them for a better job, you should probably shut your mouth.

as far as the video goes. i think part of the underlying problem is shown clearly in the video. listen to the guy narrating. he sounds like he didnt make it past a 4th grade english class :/

who is going to hire somebody for much other than working a factory line when they sound like that? working in a factory is far better than sitting at home waiting for somebody else to make your life better though. far far better.

so what has the lefty liberal obama done?

how are the black unemployment numbers holding up these days? pretty good right?

seriously, YOU are what is wrong with the people in the video. people like YOU think that Newt wanting people to work for a paycheck is bad compared to them just sitting around waiting for obama to hand deliver them their food stamps.

open your eyes and look around. the left is constantly telling blacks and minorities of all sorts how they should be given special treatment because theyre just so special and everyone owes them the world on a platter because the color of their skin. and when conservatives tells them they want to give them an equal opportunity to work, and people like you call newt a racist or some garbage. grow up and look at the facts. the left wants nothing more than to keep blacks and minorities right where they are on the government dole, just fighting for scraps at the bottom. keep on being a faithful army of voters that keep voting to get just enough to get by, and hope that your whining and screaming about fairness makes your life better. good luck.

You realize that blacks are minorities. You don't have to seperate them from minorities..they aren't some sort of strange breed of animal.

We all have a bit of racism in us, its best to identify it verses keep fooling yourself and lock it in your subconscious, only to come out and make you look like a closet racist.
I know you probably weren't consciously trying to seperate blacks from minorities..but you did anyhow. Makes your statements then jaded simply from the viewpoint your subconscious racism.

Not trying to hammer you, as I said, everyone on the planet has a touch of racism, degrees varying, but if its not identified and dealt with, it can cloud your entire picture.

What your statement is however is inaccurate. The rules for those "blacks and minorities" from a democratic ideal is not aimed at minorities (Except for exclusive, often private, legislation)..but rather for poor people. It just so happens that there is a disproportunate amount of blacks (and minorities
) that are poor for many reasons that needs no history lesson. Food stamps for instance is not a black thing, its a poor thing, and more majority (white) people are on the stamps than minorities...percentagewise is different, but numbers show the free food fuels white people more than other colors.

My uncle had a job at an assembly line, and he loved it. Wouldn't trade it for anything else. If you owned a car from another company and went to visit him, you'd have to park your car down the block.

Different strokes, I guess. I love my job, but other people would think it's hell.

This is why you should buy american cars... they've gotten better. Don't buy hyuandi and kia those are not "made in america" the money still gets sent to Korea. Even though it says built, "built" and "made" are two diffrent things that try to confuse unsure buyers.

And what generation gap are you stuck in? The REAL reality is that working in a high risk place like a car plant should require union people, and yes, it should be mandatory for people to join the UAW once hired since the risk of injury is high when working with heavy industrialized machinery. Maybe you haven't heard of Karen Silkwood, or Norma Rae, or read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Yes, some unions are out for number one, but what is wrong for being paid a prevailing wage?

America should be bashed....contrary to your delusional opinion, most of us are NOT doing fine. Anytime you have underemployed, unemployed, elderly, teenagers, graduates, and immigrants fighting for a couple of bags of peanuts, we are far from fine as inflation takes what little people can make. And we are talking basic living skills here. The new poverty includes a cell phone, a laptop or new computer, and a video game console. These are things that cause social interaction, and bollocks if you think spending 300 on a PS3 once is living high on the hog.

Standing in a three block line in a ghetto to wait for a application for the possibility of getting a job is a HORRIBLE THING. It is wintertime in Chicago, and people camped out overnight in 10 degrees with a 8 below windchill factor to get themselves a line, only for everyone to be turned away when Ford saw they underestimated how many people were going to be out there to just come and get the application. Working at Ford in Illinois is not a high paying job or a great job. It's a step above minimum wage, that's all. It's completely different than standing all day in an enclosed shelter with enough heat to keep your limbs from going numb from cold exposure.

So what, you stood in like back in 1960 or 1970 whatever and got a job. The point was, you got the gig. These people are NOT going to get the gig and this was a waste of their time and a humiliation to be led astray in one of the worst neighborhoods in Chicago, not even at Ford's plant on Torrence Avenue but at a Cook County Neighborhood Clinic outside of Roseland. How do you compare your friendly people in your line at a time where jobs were plentiful to these people in a dog eat dog competition? When the vast majority of Chicago is at a high unemployment rate, they are not in the mood to be friendly, they are in survival mode, and moving to go to the bathroom in the alley means get to the end of the line. THAT is the reality.

This has nothing to do with maturity. People should not have to be made to feel like driven cattle to survive. That provokes violence. Simple as that. Get your head out of your past and look to the reality of this future. This isn't the good old days.

Henry Ford made a model that worked. Pay people enough to buy your own products in cash, and you have a loyal workforce. While his colleagues tried other scrupulous methods and failed, and laughed at him for his own methodology, it worked! Ford should reconsider it.

Before you open your mouth and speak on something you know nothing about do some research. Google is your friend. For instance, look up what Ford did to Ford Heights, IL. Brief synopsis....they came to the town, changed the town's name, and opened a Ford Plant. They REFUSED to hire anyone that previously lived or currently lived in the new Ford Heights. I guess those people should have been glad to live in squalor as the plant didn't sustain their community or add any commerce that directly affected its residents.

Throw in currency manipulation by China and boom, you got big problems.

I think you meant to say consumption not consummation, but then, we are too focused on sex, so technically you're right anyway.

Disturbing trends in this thread:

1. The amount of people who still apply the nose-to-the-grindstone approach and spew hackneyed nonsensical jargon such as "they call it work because it's hard", "just be happy you have a job", etc.

It's 2012 people. You're telling me that this is the best we can do? We're still tied to this fracking rock, fighting the same stupid battles, and listening to the same refurbished crap from people who don't realize this is the 21st century.

No, I don't want to work 8-12 hours a day at a job I don't like just in the hope that I can retire at an age where I go to bed at eight o' clock in the evening, wake up at four in the morning, and no longer care to accomplish anything because I lost the drive that youth gave me.

No, I don't want a fracking job. "Want" is the key word. I "want" to live and enjoy life--I am forced to have a job and work. Let people like me complain.

Yes, you all should stop living off of your grandparent's depression era advice and, more importantly, stop repeating it to those of us who would like to see this civilization progress.

Yes, mindless service driven jobs are crappy--let people complain about them. We should be at a point in society where the majority of what people do is aimed towards actual progress. We should be using our technology to eliminate the need for service driven jobs.

The point we're at, as a civilization, is depressing. Let us complain.

2. Using the phrases "putting food on the table", "feed my family", etc.

Please, for Frack's sake, let's finally wash our hands of these phrases.

Every time I hear one of these phrases I can't help but conjure visions of lugging home giant sacks of potatoes, through depressed streets of a broken down city surrounded by burned out apartment buildings crowned with giant smoke stacks pumping black sludge by the gallons into the air, up three flights of stairs to a scantily furnished one bedroom apartment where my family of five lives with no heat and soot stained walls.

3. Posters who come on and tell people to go apply for jobs

SHUT UP. SHUT UP. SHUT UP.

Fracking bravo!

People do need to look at the bigger picture. Even though as thecounselor mentioned, that some people can and do enjoy assembly jobs, the point is that as a society, it is not progressive. Its just tedious work until technology is up to speed to replace you. People are entitled to complain about it.

What's sad about working for a living? What do they expect? Are people hoping to get jobs where they do nothing all day and get paid like kings for it?

Work is hard...if you don't want to do it then don't stand in line to apply. Simple as that.

And yes...I can say that because I work for a major automotive manufacturer.
edit on 22-1-2012 by nyk537 because: (no reason given)

Work is not hard. Work is just work. I really don't like it when people exaggerate work and like to show that it's hard and oh what an accomplishment it is to be there on a daily basis. Oh c'mon. Do your job, enjoy what you do, and even if you don't just do what you gotta do and go home to your family. Anyone can work and anyone can do the job. It's just a matter of what you want.

Also, work doesn't equate abuse. People can still work 8 hrs and get paid as much as they deserve. Why the need to be abused by their employers? No wonder this world is full of greed and injustice.

I disagree...some work is hard. The job I work could be considered hard as evidence of the nearly 60% turnover rate for new hires.

Hard is a relative word.

The overall fact of the matter is that technology has displaced and even eliminated most of the blue collar jobs. But that is no reason nor any excuse for people like Ford not to give anybody a equal shot. They will understand they need to make jobs in order to pass the buck around and keep it flowing when profit margins sink because there are not enough middle classers buying anything.
