I was just reading a story in a Russian paper about US and Allies building forces up near Iran and caught this as a curiosity:

The fuel industry may become a key target. While Iran is an oil exporter, it has long suffered from shortages of gasoline, buying up to 45% of its gasoline from its Gulf neighbors. In 2009 and 2010 it managed to produce enough oil products for strictly rationed domestic consumption, but the Iran’s weak refining capabilities continues to stifle economic growth.

Iran is so backward that they can't even process their own oil in a meaningful amount, and instead of working on that they move into nuclear fusion. That's almost evidence that their nuclear ambitions are not for peaceful purposes.

You have a point but i think the coming conflicts (not just iran but all over the world) have more to do with kick-starting the global economy than the worry of WMD's.

Global recession/depression is usually followed by war in these modern times.

I wouldn't say that... Not in modern times, I mean look at how #ty North Korea is, and they have not even started a war... Sooner or later war **may** break out, more than likely it will be Iran begging for aid from the US, in exchange for oil or something. Pretty sure this is oil driven by the US. US Would love to go in there just like they did with Iraq and Aphganistan.

By modern times im talking the last 100 to 150 years. Money makes the world go around. Theres nothing like a good war to get your people motivated, your industry turning and your scientists forced into new territory. Sad but true.

History speaks for itself, it's happening again. Sure, the players might have different cards but the old game is just the same.

Thats actually widespread info. Its not uncommon for energy exporting countries not to process said energy product for own consumption.

HOWEVER!!!! It is a VERY weak argument for countries who are flush with oil to say they need to develop nuclear power because they dont have oil refineries to produce gas.

JUST BUILD OIL REFINERIES!!!! IT EASIER, CHEAPER, SAFER ETC.

Yeah ... you would think it would've been easier just to build gasoline refineries. At least they wouldn't have needed to put them underground to avoid aerial attack.

By your own statement, I would assume the exact opposite of your conclusion. What better way to offset the cost of building vulnerable, expensive and ecologically horrible oil refineries than to build nuclear power stations? I don't exactly see the problem with that logic.

Also, there is no such thing as an operational nuclear fusion reactor; if there was, we would be harnessing massive amounts of energy with much less (or no) nuclear waste. Nuclear fusion has only been achievable so far in thermonuclear weapons.

It would cost Iran $40 billion and more to develop their oil infrastructure and the countries that currently control refining facilities would not like the competition for petroleum exports.

Developing their nuclear facilities however only costs $10 billion and gives them generating power for several hundred years as well as profits from the sale of low enriched Uranium.

Iran has substantial deposits of Uranium ore as well as Oil, this puts it in the position of being able to choose to do both eventually.

Iran does not want war, Iran wants profits from both Oil and Uranium, both highly lucrative business's largely controlled by Cartels and Cabals, get the picture ?

Cosmic..

I think were getting nuclear fission and fusion confused:
Fussion: the joining of two typicaly hydrogen atoms under extremes of temperature and in magnettic fields,
it would be awsome if iran or anyone could come up with a way to do this with a greater net out put of
energy than input. as it would solve the worlds energy chrisis. fusion has been experimentaly acheived but
the output energy was far less than that of the input. one of the main problems is getting materials to
line the inside of the reaction chamber as it has to be so hot.
Fission: the spliting of atoms of large urainium or other radioactive materials, it is costly can be a major security
problem and their is very little in the way of 100% safe storage or the waste.

both occur in the sun at the same time.
