Five men set themselves on fire in the capital city of Morocco, Rabat, in protest at the lack of employment in the country, especially for university graduates.

ArabNews reports that the men were part of a group called 'Unemployed Graduates' and that the incident, which took place on Jan 18, was part of a wider protest with demonstrations taking place across the country. Of the five men, three were taken to hospital, two of whom had second degree burns; the other two men had their clothing burnt but did not suffer injuries.

So sad.... it resembles the incident that started the revolution in Tunisia,
They are trying to get worldwide attention about there horrible struggle.

S & F for you samsamm9 - for bringing this to the attention of ATS. So many of us can resonnate with the hopelessness involved in looking for employment and finding nothing. So many people struggling just to hold on - young graduates, middle agers with families to support - and those of us that fall in to the 55 - 65 year old age group - too young to stop working - but not old enough for social security. Try looking for a new job when you're 61.

To have the sheer guts to set one's self on fire to try to bring this to world attention - hard to imagine. We all must take every opportunity we get to support each other - to remember that what happens to one - happens to us all. We are all connected.

We rarely talk about Morocco. I think the reason is, in most people's eyes it's just a beautiful "sunny" place to take a vacation, also an American ally. Morocco was the first nation to recognize the United States in 1777.
But the reality is that Moroccans lives are ruled by a brutal regime, called a "monarchy".

RABAT, MOROCCO - About 70 jobless Moroccans threatened to commit “collective suicide” on Friday by trying to march into phosphate quarries riddled with explosives unless they were employed by state phosphate monopoly OCP, local officials said.

70 Moroccans threaten suicide in jobs protest

I think we will hear about Morocco in the news more and more.
So sad.

Do these people get welfare benefits now ?

Hmmm.

At least there 5 less on the unemplyment rosters now.

Who can confirm this anyway ?

What kind of healthcare coverage do they have ?

Do their benefits cover self-inflicted injuries.

Why did it take two whole days to make the news if is so damn important ???????

I'm not familiar with Morocco at all, but I'll make some research and come back to you.
I knew some Moroccans, some really liked the King, while others didn't care about the monarchy... self immolation is on the rise in the Arab world, not just in Morocco.

On Wednesday, five young men self-immolated in Morocco, adding to the grim tally for a month in which others have set themselves on fire in Tunisia, Jordan and Bahrain

Self-Immolation Is on the Rise in the Arab World

I will research and post back.
