I just came across this. Do we have any solar experts out there that can give us any additional information?

It appears to be a M3-class solar flare and CME from active sunspot 1401.

dtarmageddonwatch.blogspot.com...

Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab confirm that the CME is heading for Earth, and they say strong geomagnetic storms are possible when the cloud arrives during the late hours of Jan. 21st. Their animated forecast track predicts an impact on Jan. 21st at 22:30 UT,

www.spaceweather.com is confirming the same story today.

Impact looks like it should be some time on Sunday, the 22nd.

I would expect many extraordinary nartual events considering all of the Hualbaloo around this year and the suspected impending demise of human kind...

I can offer no technical expertise on this matter. However if you stand in a coner and say "Phage","Phage","Phage". You might get a more significant response?

M-class flare is a pretty low level flare, I don't think there is anything to worry about. X class flares are the ones to worry about.

How big is a M3-class solar flare and what is the worst kind senario ?
or is it just a small one..

It's only an M-3 flare. Nothing but some nice looking northern lights will happen.

They can't really blame this on Global Warming now, can they?

Maybe it's time to change the name of the crisis yet again?
... this time from Climate Change to Solar Warming.

Ha, that's funny, but true.
I heard using a mirror works even better.

Haha!

I don't think a M class is a bad one, but then again I am not sure and will wait until Phage comments before I run around in circles screaming.

If NASA were to record a type X solar flare, do you think we would be warned?

I am looking at my IPOD solar weather ap. How did I ever live without this?

Yup, Nasa says its an M3, Jan 21, 22.

It says long duration M3 class solar flare and an earth directed CME. ETA Jan 21,22.

What is a CME?

Maybe we will get some good radio DX conditions.

Or maybe we will be roasted, does not say...

What does the term "long duration" mean in relation to solar flares?

Does this increase the effects of a solar flare?

NASA releases a ton of data on solar flares. That's how the fear mongering YouTube stars know they are coming... of course, they usually add in their own commentary about how the world is going to end and whatnot...

That was great! I will be real honest, I trust Phage's words. I have learned alot from him.

Having said that. I don't think this is anything to be concerned about. I will be out on Sunday nite looking for a beautiful sky show.

Glad I used search first, almost posted this myself.

Yeah, got a couple of questions about this one. I know M class aren't as big as X class, but what could be the effects of this? How far south can we expect auroras out of this? There were auroras as far south as Alabama a couple of months ago, how does this event compare to the one that brought that? Admittedly, I usually only follow these threads in passing, but I echo the need for a definition of "long duration".

didnt we have an x class earth directed last year? i swear we did. even that was of little effect other than some ground currents in norway (spaceweathers common notation)

not a big deal imo.
some good northern lights.. and im hoping (but its not even that big) to see them mid lattitudes.

This comment was posted in the video comment section and I thought it was one heck of a question:

"Solar flare could unleash nuclear holocaust across planet Earth, forcing hundreds of nuclear power plants into total meltdowns"

You know the Carrington solar flare in 1859 melted all the telegraph wires. Never even thought about a nuclear melt down. Guess we won't know till it happens.
