Iranian Lawmakers Say Obama Proposed Talks

www.cbsnews.com
U.S. President Barack Obama has called for direct talks with Iran in a secret letter to the Islamic Republic's supreme leader that also warned Tehran against closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a conservative Iranian lawmaker was quoted as saying Wednesday.

The White House would not confirm the letter Wednesday. National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor pointed to earlier comments from the Obama administration that noted the U.S. had a number of ways to communicate its views...

I don't think he would risk a war at this time, and most of all because it is campaign season for his re-election. Why throw a war into the mix to go along with a shaky economy, poor job performance, and waning popularity? This letter could be legit or not? The White House is not commenting on it at the moment. Iran can say whatever it wants, and they do. The burden of proof seems to be on the part of their opposition. Therefore, they could flood the crisis with propaganda and false-hoods to make their opposition look weak, confused, or like bullies. By all accounts, this strategy has worked like a charm. They have kept a war from their shores for over a decade at least, and have gained quite a bit of sympathy along the way as well.

War is not going to happen this year, because President Obama would be putting himself in a position of too many political unknowns. Besides, all bases seem to be covered. A more robust set of sanctions are ready to be imposed, Israel has the support they have been looking for with an increase in military cooperation with the US in recent weeks, and a line in the sand has been drawn regarding an Iranian closure of the Straight of Hormuz.

As far as I see it, the current situation is a win win for everyone. The President has reiterated the US position regarding this matter and has alleviated some of the concerns of their ally, Israel. Israel seems to have finally got the backing and cooperation of the US in the event this situation reaches the point of no return. Iran has more time to do whatever it wants regarding their nuclear program, to go along with a new platform to test the resolve of their big partners Russia and China, and they have more opportunities to bolster their position in the arena of public opinion. At the moment, it looks like this year will be another one fraught with more cat and mouse games, saber rattling, and politicians and military people sitting on their hands.
