This wil change the nature of warfare. Next it will shoot down bullets? heh..

"For the first time, we have a way to protect our forces, and those of our allies, against almost daily mortar attacks. Together with the U.S. Army, we have overcome the technical hurdles and we're ready to move laser weapons onto the battlefield."

Spacedauly Article on MTHEL

This is also being looked at as a replacement gun on AC-130 Gunships or some future varient gunship.

Imagine if this were deployed via satelite....

Sad to say if it shoots down missles, mortors, artiliary it will also be the end all in anti aircraft weaponry. Add this bad boy to the US avy fleets as well, and American armed forces become near invulnerable to stand off attack.

I personally dont think we should let Israel have it. Maybe we should just station some of our there for their protection.

actually a personal unit that stops bullets would be the next logical step...

speed of light holy G that is playing with power. they cant go speed of light in dragon ball Z. the emense power it takes to operate would make it too heavy for personal combat. equiped on a tank definatly. im more ambitious towards robotech style cluster rockets that can take our an aray of threats, the capability of walkingthrough towns and being able to manuaver over building and obsatcles surpases the usage of a tank substantially. the energy output is the largest obstacle. then u have to look at the SNES title mech warrior, superb mech armaments, the most impressive of which is the shoulder mounted laser cannon. explosive in space combat seem sort of hassled with rocket technology, when lasers are so much more efficient at intercepting threats from all angels any game buff knows this.

This is really an impressive capacity. Esp. if you can field it in large numbers. You can protect troops, civilians, and if you can get it a little smaller, ideal for protecting chopers from RPG's

Sorry - as "cool" as those things are, they would never work in the real world. The reason is simple - the legs make it too vulnerable. You take out a leg, it falls over and probably 200 million dollars worth of equipment is lost. With a tank, you have a much smaller target, and even if rendered stationary, the weapons can still be used.

Have you wondered why it is called a "game"?

The revolving door spins so fast between Defense contractors and the Pentagon that I always take weapons success stories like these with a grain of salt. Half the time it is just done to make the contrator and Pentagon look good and lead the congress to believe the program is achieving goals and not a waste of money. The proof is in the pudding. When soldiers are using it in action ask them what they think.

The patriot missle system is a piece of expensive rot.

I agree. Get it in the field and see if it can do anything without being set up on a perfectly scientifically stabilized platform, doesn't waste all its juice on stray flocks of pigeons or the Moon, still operates even if some sand gets blown on the lens, radar doesn't get confused by ECM jamming from a nearby transistor radio, and whether or not a 19-year-old can operate it without frying it. If it can pass all that, it still has to be able to fry incoming rounds. If it can do all that together it'll be worth something.

It should be not difficult to field it, Army has radars able to intercept incoming mortar rounds already today, they are planing to use them with Phalanx in Iraq, if you want to use MTHEL all you need is to replace Phalanx by Laser. Not too difficult, I think...
