Start by saying person is my friend, cheer on the flaws initially after that, then say what isn't true, and talk qualities of the person and why I am friendly with them. This has actually happened before. I don't mind telling people I am friends with the unpopular person...I also don't mind discussing any fair criticism. I do mind distasteful talk of anyone though (unless its all just good fun and funny as hell. but hell, I will talk poorly about myself in such a way also)
