The largest battery in the world has arrived, and you likely won’t be surprised where it landed: Hebei Province, China. The State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) and electric car maker BYD--the company that most recently made big headlines a few years back when Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway took a 10 percent stake--have teamed to create a massive battery array capable of storing 36 megawatt-hours of electricity. That’s enough to power something like 12,000 homes for an hour during a total power failure, and enough for SGCC authorities to declare it the world’s largest energy storage device. The $500 million facility is constructed of arrays of BYD batteries “larger than a football field,” according to an SGCC press release, and they should increase the region’s renewable energy efficiency by up to 10 percent.
It is hooked into 140 megawatts of wind and solar power generation projects as well as a smart grid transmission system.

I have never herd of a battery this Big just to store power?
could this be part of a weapons system?
like HARP or a big found laser that shoots of space mirrors?
or do the Chinese have some other weapon?
what are your thoughts?

the site if very good for all your new science stuff.

Batteries are used for something else are they?

$500,000,000

Just to power 12,000 homes

for 1 hour.

Sounds like a waste of money.

The entire reason for this project is probably to line somebody's pockets

That is if there was no charge, recharging it.......

Your battery will not run your vehicle for very long if your alternator quits either.........batteries are getting to be in excess of 80 or more dollars....

Is it worth it just to run your car for 20-30 minutes without the alternator?

Same concept.........

Well done China
It sounds like a great little system to complement sustainable energy sources and get away from this fossil fuel addiction. The energy collected from the sun and wind will not always be a full strength so having some redundancy in the electrical grid to store excess power when it is available and call on that power when needed is important to the electrical security of the city.

As for the comments about weapon systems there are many other energy sources for that. While there are some differences in time, batteries are not able to release all their power at once.

For energy weapons or burst power, capacitors would be a better choice since you can release all the power at once so, it seems not likely to be a weapons related development. You never know though. Also, I suspect a smart people like the Chinese people can avoid having secret weapon advances published in public media.

Why put all the batteries in one place?
I think to use on one thing.
you dont have to short circuit the batteries.
they would give a grate deal of power.

the best way that I think they should have done.
would be to have each home with its own
batteries and solar panels and wind turbine.

any spare power is fed in to the all grid.
so if some one uses more power than he
has in his batterer it comes from the gird.

do you remember the batman movie?
the villain made a power plant that was just a battery?
I think he was going to use it to send a
massive pulse thought the grid to blow it all up.

I could not find the place on the map?

The purpose of this battery is for power balancing.

Solar and wind power generation is not constant, so to keep up with the constant demand, you need to be able to store some of the power that the wind and solar are generating, in case a cloud goes by, or the wind dies down.

Power balancing is a fairly standard practice for pretty much *EVERY* large scale power generation facility and company.

This is because the LOAD fluctuates on a second by second basis, and the power generation system (Steam Turbine) takes at least 1 minute to respond to changes in power output.

This is one type of power storage for load balancing that is in common usage:

Hydroelectric Pumped Storage.
en.wikipedia.org...

You see, when you have variable power inputs to the grid, you must have power storage to take up any power that is produced in excess of the load, and to release any power that is needed by load increases.

It's not a weapon.... it's a battery.

This.

When the first thought we have when we read about tech news is omgz new weaponzzz! something is slightly off, I'd say...
It seems China is decided to have some diversification in their power systems, which is a very smart thing to do.

Very interesting news, op. S&F

Wow, that battery could put out some amperage. They've been busy making their own Star Wars program. For the amperage needed for multiple laser shots at incoming missiles maybe that's why they made it?

Part of missile defense system?
