Every time this happens I cant help but wonder what the outrage is based on.
She wasnt raped. At her age I was sexually active with older women. I knew what I was doing. I had a blast. At her age people are given life sentences
for crimes. What swings the perception pendulum?
Media likes to selectively pick its descriptions. Depending on the action involved it can be an 18 year old boy, a 16 year old man, a 15 year old
teenager or a 16 year old young adult. It all depends on what the media wants you to see. Those 18 year old soldiers are all "boys" but the 16 year
old mugger is a "young adult" or even more blatantly an "adult."
I wonder the same when somebody gets caught with porn and commentators go nuts with threats of death and castration. Well, that Urban Outfitters shirt
with a crotch shot of a 15 year old girl on it is pretty outrageous. Clearly there is a difference between a bunch of 15 year old crotch shots or even
nude shots and the raping of a toddler. But what is the image that most minds in the public immediately jump to? The toddler raping sicko. Unless they
honestly want to castrate somebody wearing an Urban Outfitters t-shirt.
It just occurred to me that given the popular treatment of women in the world that much of this outrage could be rooted in a common belief that women
are stupid. All of this daughter protection and the unequal treatment of male and female perpetrators can, to me at least, be boiled down to "women
are too stupid to take care of themselves." They go from "maturing before boys" to "being taken advantage of by boys." Because they are stupid? Is
every heroic rise to protect a poor taken advantage of female really an proclamation of female stupidity? And is someone like me just giving them more
credit than they deserve since I'm not jumping on the "protection" bandwagon?
