I think that area on that particular map always looks like that.

I could be wrong, but I've noticed that clump in that area of the world before.

The biggest one is only a 4.4, I don't think there is anything to worry about.

Or it could be a problem with the site, the USGS site doesn't show anything too unusual.

OK, I was not going to bother to comment but since you are adamant that it is never normally like that......

ETA: I see you have removed that comment

Sorry, you are wrong. There is nothing going on and activity is lower that it has been in the past 3 months.

The energy curve for Greece is flat

The energy curve for Turkey is flat

Greece counts of earthquakes

Turkey counts of earthquakes

@sunnydee: Yes absolutely.

And if a ton of little ones are happening I would think that would at least reduce the stress on the faults

Earth quakes we expect never go off.for example yellow stone was predicted to erupt in like 2005 i think.and the one in Japan wasn't expected

sorry my bad Yellowstone is a volcano but will still shake the earth if it erupts to the equivalent power of 200 H bombs

I'm from Greece and i can assure you that this happens everyday. The usual is around 10 small earthquakes a day.Sometimes a 4something hits, but it's nothing to worry about.

I cant help wondering if something is stirring around greece. The earthquakes despite the huge distances seem to happen in a circular fashion and Santorini is in the middle. Might be my imagination but i dont have one

I don't know about the earthquakes but I sure like that site. I wasn't aware of it before now. Shows all kinds of environmental notices and alarms. s&f

It also makes many mistakes so be sure to double check anything you find there.

It is run by Hungarian Radio Hams, not experts.

Be very wary of the data on earthquakes below the volcano information on RSOE. It is often incorrect. I am not saying this this current list is incorrect, but often there are problems.

If you take the Santorini area as bounded by Lat 36°N/Lon 25°E and Lat 36.5°N/Lon 26°E currently in the last month EMSC has:

Date/Time UTC,Latitude,Longitude,Magnitude,Depth(Km),Location
2012-01-09 09:39:29, 36.393, 25.508, 3.4, 5.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2012-01-08 13:11:24, 36.418, 25.414, 2.6, 6.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2012-01-08 01:16:22, 36.468, 25.538, 2.7, 2.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2012-01-06 18:48:10, 36.489, 25.526, 3.3, 2.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-29 06:16:27, 36.421, 25.396, 2.4, 9.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-26 13:57:00, 36.362, 25.473, 3.0, 2.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-24 11:25:37, 36.496, 25.922, 2.9, 93.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-23 08:18:50, 36.403, 25.418, 2.5, 9.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-22 14:10:24, 36.402, 25.381, 2.5, 8.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-18 14:24:09, 36.425, 25.421, 2.7, 6.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-18 07:20:40, 36.394, 25.516, 3.2, 10.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-18 07:17:03, 36.407, 25.414, 2.9, 3.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-18 07:04:27, 36.373, 25.434, 2.5, 4.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece
2011-12-13 19:22:47, 36.483, 25.520, 3.2, 5.0, Dodecanese Isls. Greece

This by the way represents an increase in energy release as you say.

Interestingly these is no increase in numbers so that means the magnitudes of the quakes are getting larger. Looking a a graph of them they are. I will get the NOA data and see what I can find there for smaller quakes.

RSOE is a good site to get the general idea of what is happening, when i see something that interests me i usually go to other sites to check things out.

The Santorini volcano destroyed the Minoan civilazation in the first known erruption and since it is considered a super volcano,it worries me that it has awoken.Since there were 3 erruptions in the 20th century(1927,1950 and 1956),i don't think that if it errupts now it will be a devastating one.(at least i hope so).

There is a thread that members are "monitoring" the volcano
