I recently put together a survival kit for the event of an emergency this year.

I thought it a good idea that others did the same so below is what i have in my kit with the items i have, I urge you to put together your own.

Shoes
Thermal Underwear
A sewing kit approx three times the size of those piddly match-book ones you get in hotels
Matches - heads dipped in wax to waterproof
A large and impressive swiss army knife
A first aid kit
A photo album of everyone i care about.
Bottled water/Plastic bag and rubber bands/for collecting rain water/for collecting water via condensation
A wind-up torch
A wind-up radio
A firearm/my grandads old luger
A Ray Mears bushcraft book
Condoms/For other purposes than what your thinking.
Foldable shovel
Wood saw
Flint....tinder box
Energy supplement tablets
A whetstone for sharpening my tools
Loud whistle

This is my Survival kit and it all fits into a small rucksack if packed right..I have everything i need now!

The only thing in my BOB is my wits, and understanding of how people react to disaster scenarios.

Most people run. They panic.

I'll take what they leave behind, especially all the conveniently gathered and packeged stuff that gets left behind in all the stalled out cars on clogged freeways that get abandoned when panicked lemmings feel forced to hoof it for lack of defensible shelter.

Rule 1: Don't panic. Let everyone else panic.
Wait, and then pick up all the goodies left behind. There will be more than enough.

If you run, you'll be running probably to where everyone else is running to, where, whoever else is already there is already locking up any resources you might be hoping to exploit.

Don't run. A huge urban area devoid of panicked lemmings, will offer a glut of resources, defensible ground, and if it's home ground already, you've got advantage of knowing the area.

A Swiss Army Knife is a thing of the past in the US. While it was fine for its day as folding pocket knife such as it is, the best solution would be one of the several brands of multi-tools. These are basically a pair of folding pliers available with a various assortment of other fold-out instruments about six to eight. The quality members of this field of tools are not cheap, but you can pick one that fits what you think you would need in a continuing survival situation. It could be about the single most important item that you can carry when TSHTF.

My sentiments exactly. Unless you suspect a nuke is going to hit your area then you should just stay put and fight for your home. Its not so easy to pack everything you will need and leave, never mind the hell you will encounter running for the hills.
