The Sun rises in the East and sets in the West. Not the North or South. It has been that way since the Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago.
In the winter time in the northern hemisphere, it doesn't set in the West, but instead sets
south of west. On the day in question (January 8)
in Columbus, Ohio, it was setting almost in the SW.
Plus, as I indicated in my post above, you can tell from the photos exactly where he was when he took the photos. He was on I-71 Northbound between
exit 94 and 97 in Ohio. At that point. I-71 is not exactly a North-South highway, but instead is heading more toward the Northeast and Southwest.
Therefore the Southwest (and the setting Sun) would have been behind him, and the rising moon would have been in the Northeast in front of him.
