It is definitely easier for the masses to point fingers at an invisble bogeyman, than to actually do something. It's much easier to believe that things are out of our control, because if it wasn't, with a bit of effort and work we could actually change the world. That is, if the people who exist in top section of the world pyramid wasn't so lazy, cold, or indifferent.
It is scarier to think that all of the wrong in the world is the direct result of collective and individual apathy, as opposed to forces actually working against good in the world. It would mean that the collective humanity is quite evil.
