I am in total agreement with the fact that this is extremely dangerous to our rights. I am trying to educate as many people as I can but the sad truth of it is, people are shell shocked I think by the entire global environment. System overload in the Matrix I think. People's eyes glaze over as they nod their head in agreement. I don't get it

Free speech will only die when we allow ourselves to be cowed in to silence and refuse to exercise our God-given rights. While it is important for us to be active in the political process and let our representatives (really, ours?
) know where we stand on such issues, it would appear Congress is going to do whatever it wants to do irrespective of our opinions.
Yes, we should be screaming bloody murder about SOPA and PIPPA so we can at least say we did our part in averting this attempt at global censorship but we must also be prepared for the event of it's eventual passage and start developing methods to work around it.
For all the good-sounding intent of such bills we know it will be used to crush dissent and political opposition. These gangsters only look out for themselves and it's time we the people started doing the same and acting in concert just as much as they do. It's only because we act as individuals that they have gained so much power over the rest of us.
2012 will be an interesting year and a critical time for deciding what the future of mankind will be on this planet.

Thank you for stepping up and taking a strong stand on this issue SO. Leadership is what we need for freedom to remain more than just a word in these trying times.

This is exactly the point!! SOPA would enable the government to block a domain on a global level, in particular when it's a site hosted ELSEWHERE (not in the states) - this is the whole idea!

So..no matter where a site is hosted...it would not be able to be accessed from the USA.
SOPA would simply make it "short and painful"..it is like a button for them to disable access via the domain URL in your browser. So you would enter http:// whatever .site.com and the address would be blocked. Where the site then is hosted is not important anymore.

Holy smokes. That's crap as. Sort of like our stupid Australian website Blacklist... Censored sites. Though most of them are like kiddy porn website, etc... And the websites do get reviewed by an "independant" panel.

Anti-SOPA protests in the streets should be organised, while you still can use social networks for it.

I would love to sign the petition at the White House website, but it doesn't seem to be allowing me to register so I can actually sign it.

I just have on question for this regarding ATS:

Does this law apply in other countries or does it apply only to websites hosted in the US?

I mean, you could always migrate the website to another server in a neutral country, like for example Switzerland or Lichtenstein and they are not part of the EU either so they are not under the command of the higher powers.

China, Australia, Spain just a few days ago www.bbc.co.uk... and what other countries are now behind the Internet iron curtain.

Writing congressman, okay ... but ... a boycott has made godaddy waiver back and forth on its support. Perhaps going after the supporters with boycotts is a more effective solution. boycottcensors.wordpress.com...

It is my understanding that it doesn't matter where the website is hosted, if it is in violation it is blocked in the US.

If you re-read the OP just under the video:

If passed, the bills would enabled the blocking of such sites to everyone in the United States, with little or no due-process, and little or no confirmation a complaint originates with the actual copyright holder.

However, learned legal analysts have agreed that the "non-circumvention" aspects of SOPA and PIPA could easily be used to legally block access to domains owned and operated in the United States.

For example, if an "illegal" content domain is blocked, and an ATS member posts the IP address of the domain's web server, one complaint could get all of ATS blocked to the entire nation.

Pretty scary stuff.

Welcome to China USA! Good luck on squashing this bill, seems though that the people don't really have a choice in the matter.
Is this what freedom is about? Dictatorship?

No petitions will stop this, no amount of protesting. It seems decided already much like the NDAA.

The only time people scream is when their directly affected and even then getting them to act is almost impossible. Trying to create awareness on this is a great idea but due to how lazy people are and how tuned into their tv's they are it's doubtful anything will come of it.

Hate to say it but we westerners have become complacent, it's a perfect time for a dictator to take over.

That's fine, roll over and take it.

Some of us choose to take a stand. Of course, those defeatists who are perfectly willing to stand around and whine while someone else does the lifting will forever be with us.

You're welcome.

The next global crisis will show how truly important the internet is... Assuming the sites for sharing news and information are all still up and running.

If not, you may be in the dark... Not a good place to be.

Mayhaps they do know something

Preventing panic, a run on the banks, rioting, looting, hording and utter chaos will likely be a top priority.... The ability to control ALL news and information would be key to achieving that... At least for as long as possible.

Sites (especially ATS) that can be way ahead of the MSM in news and information, and that provide a forum for people to discuss first hand local and regional news and events would need to be taken offline... Along with popular blogs and social networks that don't offer the ability to censor and control the dialog, news and information.

One complaint can take any site offline?

That would make it all possible.

SOPA & PIPA have some major forces behind them in the entertainment industry.

The chances are high that these bills will pass and there is not enough time to wake Americans up to this reality.

IMO the only way to invalidate SOPA/PIPA and the other freedom busting bills/laws/acts is to Get Ron Paul into the white house.

He is the only candidate that is against all of these things and could very well limit or completely abolish the federal enforcement of these violations altogether.

Why do you guys think the feds decided to go after medical marijuana in CA? Obama gave the go. These unconstitutional 'laws' mean nothing if the executive branch (president) decides not to enforce them.

Everybody call your representatives and spread the word on SOPA/PIPA but be ready for a backup plan in case our representatives decide to skip the interest of the people and direct it in the path of their bankrollers. And we all know they will.....

BTW, if SOPA/PIPA were already in existence, ATS would've been squashed LONG ago. Don't think its just about copy rights and intellectual property, they want to have full control at all times and are conditioning us to accept it as something that we agreed to.

Wouldnt a quick site-wide targeted-search bring up all pirated content so that it can be removed manually? I know that anti-piracy companies work with such searches...

Should Boycott Microsoft and Apple, for them not being against SOPA.

Instead of the godaddy event where boycotted companies who where for SOPA should try to force companies to be openly against it, via boycotts. imho

Really this is the most important legislation right now as this is truely about censorship.

Great info and correctly laid out.

Now the REAL question is if SOPA was truly engineered to fight online piracy or rather ATS-like sites?

What danger does downloading movies/music pose? And why would the Government even consider getting involved? They never get involved in anything unless there is an end game for them.

Now, what danger does the truth pose? Therein lies the puzzle.

The Government is threatened by freedom of speech and expression so what is the real issue here? What are they trying to stop...The new Animation Block Buster from being downloaded or the spread of ideas, information and dissent?

So by creating legislation for one front, the rest can be incorporated at will. Anytime, anyplace and anything.

I think I know the answer already.

Peace

It's not just movies and games its everything. You can get anything you want from pirated sites...documents, pictures, anything you can think of is on pirated web sites. But I don't think there just going after that stuff. They want to censor the internet plain and simple.

Surely no president would sign such legislation into law.
Although I do not know where our current president stands on this issue....

This is scary!!!

Its a pretty bad state of affair we are facing. So many tyrannical laws being thrust upon us to get us to start rioting. TPTB want a confrontation in the streets with police and military but I dont think its gonna play out like that, i think the scoundrels creating this tyranny will be targetted individually which is what the fear the most.
