Yearning makes the heart deep.
St Augustine

If there is one trait which unifies almost all of humanity, it is the yearning to find some meaning to our existence. We look for it within ourselves, outside of ourselves, alternate realities or even other dimensions.

This search is (in my opinion, anyways) best symbolized by the rising and setting of the sun

The purpose of this contest is to prompt you to write a story of how you came to your personal beliefs.

They may be based on any religion, spirituality or even a non-religion. An example of a non-religion might be buddhism, where the objective is to become aware of ourselves and the world around us:

We move through the world in a narrow groove, preoccupied with the petty things we see and hear, brooding over our prejudices, passing by the joys of life without even knowing that we have missed anything. Never for a moment do we taste the heady wine of freedom. We are as truly imprisoned as if we lay at the bottom of a dungeon, heaped with chains.
Yang Chu 4th Century BCE

Humanity's surviving literature is full of such thoughts, yet it is only a fraction of all that once existed. New religions rose up to despoil all that went before, relegating it to heaps of ashes and dust as was the fate of the Library in ancient Alexandria.

Here are a few more examples to set you to thinking:

There is a distinction between belief in a set of propositions and a faith which enables us to put our trust in them.
Karen Armstrong - A History of God

I am He whom I love, and He whom I love is I:
We are two spirits dwelling in one body.
If thou seest me, thou seest Him,
And if thou seest Him, thou seest us both.
Al-Hajjal

To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself to us as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their most primitive forms - this knowledge, this feeling, is at the center of all true religiousnous. In this sense, and in this sense only, I belong to the ranks of devoutly religious men.
Albert Einstein - Strange is our Situation Here on Earth

Creativity is next to Godliness.

May I (again) assume that our stories can be presented in the form of fiction, rather than a biography?
