Well, if you want to know what the Mayans thought, why dont you visit the Yucatan, and ask them. There are about 12 Million living there, and they would be glad to share their beliefs.

Their calendar does not "end" at 2012, it ends one cycle, and another begins. The Mayans do not see time as linear, but as one cycle inside another, inside another, inside another. The Spanish Church destroyed most of the knowledge kept by Mayan astronomers, i am pretty sure it must have shocked them when they realized how advanced the Mayans actually were.

Since we gauge Time as the orbit of the earth around the sun around the galaxay around the Universe, the Mayan concept of time is a better representation of the physical aspect of time.

The Mayans could not predict the rise of Venus in the sky above the horizon past 2012, hence the end of the calender cycle.
The use of the calender for this culture was related to the cycle of planting, an essential use of astronomy for "primative" peoples.
Funny how "advanced" peoples read so much into this stuff...

Sure, the Mayans were clever people for their time. However, it is difficult to look 4,000 years into the future with any optimism no matter what point in time you're looking foward from. My calendar ends December 31, 2005. Time to prepare the Kool-Aid.

It's hard for me to buy into this end of the world scenario but it is strange that they chose to end thier calendar at this time. What strikes me as odd is the fact that during that year our sun should be at it's peak of sun spot activity for this cycle. Also, during that time the sun should reverse it's poles as it does every eleven years. Finally, our sun should be in a rare alingment with the "dark rift" in the Milky Way. It definitely makes for some interesting theories over the next seven years.

I saw a show once before where they had discovered a hidden room inside the Sphinx, supposedly a part of the "Hall of Records". This room had pictures of a helicopter, a tank, a submarine ship, UFO, and automobile on one wall. Also, there was a wall that warned that if mankind doesn't take care of mother Earth, that our civilization would suffer an ending as their civilization did.

I've done quite a bit of research on the subject and what makes things really eerie is the fact that so many prophecies coming to light now point to the year 2012. The Mayan long count ends on Dec 21st (according to most sources), the hopi prophecy, Terrence and Dennis McKenna calculated 2012 to be the "zero point' of time, as well as the supposed shifting of the poles.
From my understanding, this will not be some global apocalypse. It will be more of a step of evolution to bring our species up to speed with higher forms of life. It is hypothesized that we will be able to harness time technology and have increased psychic facilities. Even if you look around today, people are slowly tuning into the changes our world is going through. The changes happen subtlely so that those that seek truth may see, but the ignorant will never believe.

The Maya never believed December 21 2012 to be the end of the world, thats just something made up simply because it is the end of their calendar, although knowing how alot of people in this messed up world seem to react when they see or read something that has "the end" in it, it is easy to see how alot of people have come to this paranoid conclusion.

The Maya calendar is made up of many cycles within cycles within other cycles and December 21 2012 is just the end of one of those cycles, and as im sure most people with a brain would know.. a cycle is usually proceeded by another cycle.

From what i believe that the maya believed, 2012 is the beginning of the world of the fifth sun. we are currently "between worlds", the last one ending in 1987. this period is a transitional stage in which the world goes through a massive change.. wars, social chaos, environmental destruction etc.. and the materialistic world we live in begins to die. People will begin to go through rather drastic personal changes.

The maya believe that December 21 2012 will be the beginning of a new era in which people live in peace and harmony with the earth. This will be a result of, and signified, by the alignment of the winter solstice sun with our galaxy (an event that only happens every 26,000 years). This cosmic cross is said to be the embodiment of the Sacred Tree, The Tree of Life. It has been said that this will open up a channel for cosmic energy to flow through to the earth and cleanse it. All the people on this earth will be enlightened and we will have advanced beyond our comprehension, both technologically and spiritually.

It is a time to look forward to, not be scared of. If of course the Maya's are correct. We will just have to wait and see. Im sure this can be elaborated on further, but just trying to give you all a short version of what I believe to be what this date is all about.

I was wondering when you say "all people".... give me real world example of oh say...... a crack addict. What happens to the crack addict living on the streets after this "enlightenment" happens... or how about the Russian Mafia, are you implying that upon "enlightenment" these people will wake up one morning, see the light, stop their lives of crime and what not?

Please clarify how this enlighten will affect the day to day happensing of ALL people both good and bad.

Will corrupt politiocians says "ya know, I dont need the extra $40 million severence package..."

Our calender we use today is about 4 yrs off of the mayan calender.I believe there will be an enlightment of the human race.We as humans can only live in an oxymoran world for so long.:

Anyway I think he meanse that certain things will begin to make sense to humans that they don't have any idea of right nor and/or that they would probably scoff at right now. All the common ideas and beliefs in the current society will cease to make sense.

I know what he means, but his statement is just too broad. I was trying to get him to be more specific or come to the conclusion his statement is inaccurate. Human nature is human nature. Had he not used "ALL" in his statement....

i shouldnt of said "all people". sorry sir, my mistake. I believe it is up to us to decide whether or not we choose this path of enlightenment. I think this is what the Maya were saying. From what i have read, and im not sure if this is correct because its been a while since i have looked into the subject, but this may be one of the reasons why the period after this date is blank. We have the power to choose which road we want to go down, either to continue this life of despair and misery, or this path of enlightenment.

As i stated earlier, we are in a transitional stage. The ideas and beliefs we hold towards society and the environment are changing and this date is the time when this change is supposed to have been completed and we will cease to think and live the way we do now. The time after this date is an era where we can live in peace and harmony with mother earth, if we choose to do so.

Im not any kind of expert on this subject.. and i wouldnt be surprised if im wrong on alot of things. Hope this might help you with what i was trying to say above. Criticise all you want.. its good.

In reply to the comments made earlier(page 4) about the Earth passing through an dark spot in space. I must make the comment that this may be the abyss of Revelations, I am however not too concerned with any speculation as to the end of the world. If it happens, it happens, if it doesn't, then awesome. I can look forward to growing old with my family. I find that it's better to focus on the positive things in the present, and if need be, protect them. But to concern one's self with the end of the world, is truly unimportant, it cannot be affected if it is true, and if it's false, you get to live longer. In short, enjoy your blessings and live life to the fullest.

after this pope dies there will be only one more pope before the end of the world so 2012 or 2013 sounds somewhat accurate

hard to believe how world can die ........ hardly any natural disaster can destroy the earth for the time being, no asteriods for the time being are a threat....so how on earth can the world die?
