China cuts two-thirds of popular television shows

I just watched 1984", "A Brave New World" & "Farenheit 451". They were all very interesting These authors were true visionaries (imo),But I see many similarities nowadays and i'm sure this is just the beginning.

I am sure that the Chinese can live without Desperate Houswives and that talentless idiot Kim Kardashian. The filth that is on tv these days it's no wonder our culture has become what it has. Most of TV is nothing more than a one way sewer pipe into all of our homes. It's sad because I am for a more free society, but it's the truth. ~SheopleNation

Talk about control freaks, That so called government will eventually decide when its people are literally allowed too breath, Slashing tv shows is just one step too far,a waste of time and almost completely pointless. Thanks for the details anyway

some of us do censor content, by not watching offensive shows. i would rather watch chopped or iron chef than 2 1/2 men. i also watch alot of history and science shows. mythbusters, how it's made, good eats, holmes on holmes, ect. i also watch ballet and music shows on ovation.

i love holmes on homes. mike is awesome. he'll come in to fix a job and inevitably he'll add some extras, just to make it up to him standars. he also does a show about people who get houses that weren't inspected properly. now, speaking of canada, the red green show is a hoot. workman's corner w/ductape is too funny.

this is that last season for desperate housewives. it'll be over before the chinese take over. now, as for the kar-trash-ians and jersy shore, i wish they'd both get cancelled

It is a sad day when we equate watching the next top model with 'freedom.'

I don't think the important parts of this story are what they cut, but why.

If they cut 'survivor' I understand, but if they cut real journalism, via documentary, it's a whole different ballpark.

We could all live better lives if we weren't obsessed with the banal bullstuff the telly spews on the regular, but the crap shows are still on because people watch them.

Its a conversation we should have right here in the US.

Some posters are equating Desperate House Wives, Jersey Shore, and Dancing With the Stars (all of IMO are terrible shows) with Snuff, and Child Porn!!! PLEASE! How far to the extreme do you have to lean! I have never heard a worse Straw Man! There is a big difference between an actual video of a serial killer killing someone and the show Dexter!

Where does it end!? "Oh we can't have the populace watching Star Trek anymore, because Commander Sisko said damn...that is offensive" or how about this "We can't show this teenage love drama because it shows kids doing stuff that actual human beings do on a daily basis"

This thread is absurd and as another poster on this thread said the Chinese people do not agree with this move. This is authoritarianism!


ETA: What ever happened to personal responsibility, and parents taking responsibility with what their children watch.

Being pro-Censorship is an odd position to take on a site like this one.

Considering the reasons you gave, you would be for censoring ATS correct? Can't have it both ways.

China's true concern is that it's citizens will demand Freedom, Human Rights and opportunity for all instead of the elite few who Dictate to them currently. You clearly support that. Are you posting from China? We've had an admitted representative from China posting here one other time during the Olympics. Just asking.

I agree with op this should but never will be adopted by western country's. We have lost control of one of the biggest influential outlets the shapes a society . In the UK we had Mary Whitehouse even though she was evangelical she did get some things right and media corporations feared her. There was no nudity, drug usage and violence on terrestrial TV on her watch. There should be a census done on how much crime, drug use and most of all violent crime went up when censorship laws got soft.

I'm guessing they need more time slots for anti-West propaganda.

If you were for a free society you would not be talking like a Nazi. Think about this Germany in the 30s had a tight control on the media how did it work out for them?

the U.S will never do that. too much money is made on these shows the zombies in america watch on daily basis and advertisements, style, "music" etc.
that's why i don't watch t.v, can't watch it for more than a few seconds.

I currently live in China, been here for 5 years they are doing this to stop people learning how to think outside the box ie critical thinking, look at all the unrest here in 2011. Last year they banned all time travel movies and shows because they are not real. I mean how can someone decide that for 1.6 billion people ? If i could i would import a delorium and play the power of love

Can they please cancel Jersey Shore too?
