Exotic Russian rock CAME FROM OUTER SPACE

www.theregister.co.uk

Atom-bothering boffins have proved that a crystal previously only found in labs also occurs naturally - in outer space.

The scientists have found evidence that a 'quasicrystal' uncovered in Russia was actually part of a meteorite that fell to Earth rather than a material that was formed naturally on our home world.

Quasicrystals - the discovery of which bagged Daniel Shechtman of the Israel Institute of Technology last year's Nobel Prize in chemistry - have a structure that is orderly, but unlike regular crystals they're not translationally symmetrical. In other words, a quasicrystal

The more we go along the more we learn.
I don't know what we can use quasi crystals for.

But from reading posts here on ats regarding area 51. Quasi crystals are being used or being studied there.

Now learning that they can naturally occur in space might be a good incentive to go out and start mining asteroids.

If they are useful of course.

I would love to come across a large piece of space debris, preferably in some type of solid rock form. Would NASA try and claim it from me? I think that only applies to their satellites, but I'm not sure.
