The UK government just can’t help itself.

Iran closing the straights simply cannot be allowed, regardless of your feelings on who's in the "right" over this.

That small sliver of sea, if closed, would send our fragile economies tumbling and ruin the lives of hundreds of thousands. There is also the small fact that closing an international waterway is an Act of War, so we are well within our rights to respond.

No aircraft carriers.

We have HMS Ocean and the other assault ships, plus NATO's second largest Navy. We also have a new carrier being built, due for completion in 2015 with the second following on a couple of years later. We haven't had an operational Fleet carrier since 1986 anyway, so not really sure what your point is.

Naval destroyers costing a billion pounds apiece ... each armed with one big gun.

Ah, someone who saw an overhyped article 3 years ago and still believes it holds true. The problems on the Type 45 regarding it's Astor missile system has been fixed and all T-45's in service are fully operational.

Again, old problems which were sorted out ages ago.

Brand new fighter airplanes being chopped up as spares to fix others ... the list is endless.

If you're referring to the Typhoons, we simply don;t need the amount we ordered. Surely it makes sense to decommssion some and use for spares? Every military does it, again, what's your point?

And if the list is endless, do go on. It's fun...

Argentina? Despite all the gusto and hot air, they won't dare to take the Falklands!

Seriously though, aside from the US, there isn't a power in the world that can touch us without being horribly burnt.

Those destroyers you speak of are the most advanced "frigates" in the world, they are designed to combat air threats and are VERY good at what they do.

They are Destroyers, not Frigates. We have a seperate Frigate replacement program which is due to deliver the first ships in 2020.

The UK has one...if not the worlds best trained military, our special forces units are frequently shipped out to administer training to their US counterparts and also the Israeli special forces.

Indeed. Even the much vaunted US sends it's submariners to do our Perisher course, for example, because the training is second to none.

Oh yes and Britian has 3 aircraft carriers, and currently constructing what are basicaly 2 Nimitz class aircraft carriers our country cannot afford, but by jingo it would be a damned bloody disservice to the nation not to spend all that tax payers debt on some shiny new sea bobbles

3? We haven't had 3 Carriers since at least the 70's, perhaps earlier. We currently have no Fleet carriers at all.

And what's this about us not being able to afford them? What tosh and just think of the jobs created and supported by the construction, very important during times like this.

The UK forces being the best is a fallacy, sure we have certain units that are good but the regular units are degrading and degrading fast due to the ludicriss human rights laws in the UK. Our regular soldiers are full of mummys boys these days to be fair, the RAF is full of fat bastards too. I'd hardly call them the best. I'd say the marines, Para's, SAS/SBS are the best at what they do though.

And you'd know this, how? All regular units have been cycled through Afghan and Iraq and as a result are certainly not "mummies" boys at all. I'd love you to go up to a member of the Anglians, or the Rifles and tell them that.

What are they going to do ask the French to borrow some ships and trained men. The UK is in a sad place in its history the people bought into the progressive crap and look were they are now.

I used to really admire the British people but when they gave up all of there rights something changed for them. Now there country reminds me of France 2.0.

What? We have a larger Navy than France you plank and certainly have much more combat ready soldiers than they do. You clearly don't have a clue.

This poster has it about right.
But I am not sure if the US is pulling the strings or has it strings being pulled. But the UK is not acting in its best interest. From the way they treat there people to the way they treat the rest of the world.

Don't get me wrong the US is just as bad if not worse. We need to see this for what it is, what happens for the UK will happen for the US and the other way around.

I believe the US,UK,Australia are tied together and what happens to one will happen to all.

We are not seeing the whole picture the lies are deep. Just like the US putting troops in Australia. We are all tied together.

I stand by what I say, the UK has excellent specialist units but their regulars are a shambles. I have already said they are experienced but at the same time they are mollycoddled and do not recieve the required training due to human rights laws in the UK.

What unit did you serve with and when? I don't disbelieve you, but I think there may be a certain bias at play here.

A lot lower than most. I'm sure you will trot out the 950% figure, which is bogus.

Ah, I see now. You're just parrotting things you;ve heard without actually knowing for yourself. What a tool! We don;t have camera's on every corner and we don't have "government run media". I;m sure though that you will trot out the old "caught 300 times a day figure", but again I suspect this is merely parrotting what you read without checking the facts. I have read the actual report that figure was plucked from, so if you;re going down this route I'd do your homework first matey.

I think you'll find most people define the Type 45 warship as a destroyer.

A billion pound warship, bobbing about the seas, armed with one gun. Oh, not content with blowing a billion pounds on one such ship, you ordered 12 then cancelled 6, leaving 6 white elephants for your fleet. I say fleet, your nation has more admirals and vice admirals than you have ships.

We've done this dance before, I;m sure of it. But as it stands, as pointed out by me previously, you;re quite wrong on your T-45 info mate. They are the most advanced air defence ship in service, in any Navy, at this time and they are fully operational.

As for the Admirals comment, I am sure I have corrected you on this before. We don't. We have around 40 odd Admirals and a Fleet of over 100 ships.

Okay, this thread seems to be going completely of topic, i hate when people go all deffencive about there country, i would like to say people read your facts, firstly The UK said they would join the US in responding militarilly if Iran where to close it, Secondly i have just read now that the EU have thought about banning oil imports from Iran, which is a better way to react then war to be honest, heres the link Iran nuclear Crisis

You are a little confused. Irans threat to shut the Straights is a response to the sanctions, not the EU responding with sanctions to the threat of the straights shutting.

Theyre is no dictatorship in Iran and we shouldnt wage war over there poor government just yet, ( i know they treat their women terribly over there ) However it is good that the EU have now stepped in on this matter,

A religious theocracy is just as bad.

And the EU haven't "stepped in" (the UK is part of the EU btw), they are slapping sanctions on Iran as a result of NPT non-compliance. Iran threatens to shut the straights, then the US and UK threaten a slapping if they do.

Although if we do shut of imports it could pottentiolly effect our economy even worse than it is. Overall, maybe the US shouldnt of threatened with sanctions in the first place

Not in the slightest. We don't get any Oil from Iran. If anything, the Oil price rise as a result will benefit our economy in relation to tax receipts. You are aware of this whole saga, aren't you? You do know why this is all happening? You seem to a little confused....

Does it really matter if it is 950% or 150% ?

They have put your country and people behind the 8 ball. Just like many other countries what happens when there are no more bailouts? And austerity has not worked?

I bet it will be a joining of certain countries together using war and fear.

Well, yes, when it is neither. It is actually between 60-70% and what you also seem to be blissfully unaware of is that a lot of our national debt is on long term, low interest bonds due to the stability of our economy, the fact we control our own money and it's management, which is totally different for other countries within the Euro.

Cutting from within? Elaborate on your (deliberately) obscure reference.

I also note you neglect to defend my rebuffing of your previous nonsense. Is that an admittal that you got things wrong?

There does seem to be an awful lot of anti-British nonsense on ATS of late, more so than usual.

Actually, it was an abysmally ill-informed post full of nonsense.

And it isn't 950% of GDP, not even close. What you're quoting without, even checking, is the total of all debt, including private and that held by commercial entities. For Government/Sovereign debt it is actually closer to 70% and this is the debt the markets are interested in.

posted on Jan, 4 2012 @ 05:44 PM

For a further insight into Sovereign debt, just look at Japan or Germany. Both have higher debt ratio's than the UK at 198% and 83% respectively and neither of them are in particualr trouble, again because the markets trust their economies.

How do you cut a country from within?

Offer endless credit to its people

Endless wars

Slowly take away personal freedoms

Elections mean nothing

Central banking

Fiat currencies

Government controlled media

Degrading the moral fabric of a country

Political correctness

Quantive easing

Im sorry but following every thread about the current Iranian/M.E problems and it seems certain members not naming names seem to be trolling, coming out with the same tired worn out BS to get a bite. Fair enough if you dont agree with war and are a pacifist but this i very much doubt by reading your replies, so its a case of just spoiling for a fight. Do us a favor yeah and if you must reply then at least research your facts properly and not rely on ancient news articles taken from heavily biased media for proof.

Labour liked doing that, but the new Government is actually repealing a lot of the draconian anti Terror BS put in my Blair and Brown.

Hardly. Had Labour won in 2010, then we would have seen a very different UK and one which, in most likelyhood, would be in worse shape financially.

The BoE has been around since the 17th century and actually helped the UK become the power it is. Not sure what your point is here.

Your posts are beyond a joke, you clearly like bashing the UK for no apparent reason and seeing as your location is not revealed and also you failed to comply to a request to state what country you are from; this is so you don't have to hear insults about yourself and your country from that poster who, would have been as equally childish had you revealed it. Making up statements about the UK that aren't true have merely made you look foolish and clueless and seeing as you have done this without revealing your own location clearly shows that this is an act of cowardice. I am glad stumason has picked out your posts and pointed out the ignorance behind them.
