The discovery of new deep-sea hot springs off Antarctica may rewrite theories of how marine creatures populate the world's oceans.

Scientists say the underwater plumes -- located between the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula -- are chock-full of new species, including a pale, ghostly-looking octopus, a predatory seven-legged sea star and a hairy-chested "yeti" crab.

Experts say the strangest thing is what they didn't find -- tube worms, shrimp and mussels that have been found at the world's other deep-sea hydrothermal vent communities

Once again, Antarctica yields new information for science. I foresee many more discoveries to be found in the coming years regarding life in one of the most brutal environments on the planet. That life can flurish in Antarctica is a testament to the ability of life to develop and evolve in harsh climates. This research may prove valuable to understanding life on earth, as well as the development of life in space.

Great find. ....There was a video on msm but it disappeared when I tried to play it. Maybe it will show up on youtube. Hope so - there are several really cool new species!

Is crazy how far we've made it out in space yet our oceans are almost totally unexplored at the extreme depths. The largest mountains on the planet are under the sea! How incredible is that! I love stories like these
