It's a throwback to the old Content Contributor scheme.

There were 3 levels, Bronzone, Silver & Gold.

You received them based on your flag to post to star ratio...

To me most members have black... or maybe what you're calling white is the silver border some have? They're close enough that on some monitors it could be confused. The silver/gold borders have to do with the WATS/Karma thing.

You have a silver border around your posts as you are a silver level contributor.

I have gold/orange as I am gold level.

Apparently,you should be a silver level contributor,but I guess they no longer honor this system.

BRONZE: The first of our elite levels also triggers the code that removes ads from the discussion board*, the indicator requires at least: 300 posts, 300 stars, and 300 flags.
BRONZE: (exception) Members with more than 2,000 posts, but less than the other levels for bronze receive the "BRONZE" tag, but still see ads.
SILVER: The second of our elite levels who see no ads on the board, the indicator requires at least: 400 posts, 500 stars, and 600 flags.
GOLD: The highest of our elite levels who see no ads on the board, the indicator requires at least: 500 posts, 750 stars, and 1,000 flags.
WATS is basically a calculation combining stars, flags, applause etc.. Karma is for posting..

Isn't it something to do with the WATS rating now?

Looking at the members in the top 50 list for example, they all seem to have this gold border around their posts, and those who have a rating close to those in the top 50 all seem to have the silver border as well.

In fact when I think back, and I could be mistaken, but I think I read in a past thread somewhere that something like the next 50 (so the members 50 to 100 in the WATS list) will all have the silver border while those in the top 50 will all have gold. Not sure though but I'll look for that thread..
