The app I use shows the depth at 217 miles (384km) .. can that be accurate? if so then I doubt Japan will even notice ..

My thoughts and prayers are with the nation of Japan.

They have suffered so much but still retain the dignity that defines them.

Good luck and God bless.

It's ATS. If you declared the sky was blue, someone would question your definition and shade of blue while someone else demanded pics or it didn't happen.

Happy New Year ATS!

Was it one or two quakes? I saw the first one go off using eQuake and it showed a 7.0 somewhere in Japan... then a few minutes later my screen shook again and it said a 7.0 in Izu Islands Japan.

Was just one. Saw it clearly in GEE, and the USGS is reporting just one...

Probably a second sensor picking up the first quake, I notice it quite often .. there was a 4.0 near me in Ohio today at 3:05pm and 3 different sensors picked it up

Yea, cause we just take peoples word for things around here. Anyway, my point was.. this isn't significant in terms of damage and gettin all antsy. Unless of course you want to make the argument of it being a pre cursor to something much larger/closer to the surface.

Huge earthquake on new years, what else is to come?

Or you could look at it another way.....all earthquakes are over ...for this year of 2012.

I am glad you are safe...and I hope and pray... that the earth stays quiet for you all in Japan the rest of the year.

The video doesn't do much justice showing how it felt except for the light shaking but yeah, I don't think any buildings fell down to shreds and hopefully it doesn't lead to that.

Link to report.

www.ndtv.com...

Is there another quake this time in Siberia, a 6.6? www.ndtv.com... or is this old news just being rehashed?

Its the same one they just downgraded the magnitude. So it seem like there wont be any major damage. This one happened really deep.
