Not a single missile was fired and the Straight of Hormuz was shut down for five hours. Not a single warship, merchant vessel or oil tanker ventured into Hormuz, further solidifying Iran's statement " that shutting the Straight is as easy as drinking water. "

Source

By a media trick, Tehran proved its claim that closing the Strait of Hormuz is as "easy as drinking water," debkafile reports. First thing Saturday morning, Saturday, Dec. 31, Iran's state agencies "reported" long-range and other missiles had been test-fired as part of its ongoing naval drill around the Strait of Hormuz. Ahead of the test, Tehran closed its territorial waters. For five hours Saturday, not a single warship, merchant vessel or oil tanker ventured into the 30-mile wide Hormuz strait, waiting to hear from Tehran' that the test was over.

Instead Iran has proposed nuclear talks with the UN Security Council and the five permament members and Germany ( better know as P5 + 1 ), and delays it's missile testing...on Dec 21 the IAEA confirmed a potential meeting with Iran.

Source

Iran has proposed a new round of talks on its controversial nuclear program while apparently delaying long-range missiles tests that it had said would take place Saturday.

The state-run IRNA news agency says nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili has invited the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany (known as the P5 + 1) to "come back to talks."

Are you kidding me??! Obama and Co. have been playing with people's fears and emotions, talking about things as if war could erupt at any time...and all the while they've KNOWN serious talks have been on the table since the 21st??? The TWENTY FIRST of DECEMBER?

Am I the only one who has just about had ENOUGH of this crap where scaring the stuffing out of the public is considered sport or something while they have SOLID and tangible things working in the background which makes all the fear mongering criminally misleading??? We saw this in September... We saw it in October and now we see it again..and that is JUST the Middle East and Iran. We've apparently been swapping campfire stories and giving big hugs to Taliban commanders while leading the public to believe we're in terrible trouble over there and tragedy could come any time. ENOUGH!

How's this for a resolution into the new year. Honesty! It's been so long since it's been tried, hey, it's worth a shot just for old times sake!

I don't advocate under any circumstances, unless attacked, that we intiate war. Certainly any country surrounded by hostile forces and foreign occupiers, will try by any means to protect it's self.

Your right! What do you think the "war on TERROR" is? Its not a war on "terrorist".Its a war on terror, which is fear. I dont think "fear" is going to turn himself in anytime soon either

Extreme fear: "people fled in terror"; "a terror of darkness". The use of such fear to intimidate people, esp. for political reasons: "weapons of terror".

Maybe the US should play some mind games as well and start sinking the Iranian ships one by one until the remainder flees the area?? Then just deny any involvement!

Sounds to me like a cold war with Iran has already begun.

This shows Iran means what they say and they won't back down to u.s. demands. If these two countries refuse to budge war is a dangerous possibility which would cause more debt and inflation than closing the strait down. War with Iran could be so costly it could be the final nail for the dollar.

Iranian waters only stretch out 8 miles off the coast of iran. There are 22 more miles of water which is the straight of hormuz. However, these waters are international, ships just dont dare go through there because it is too shallow. Therefore they need to use iranian waters as well.

Thats what they mean by this line in the op:

For five hours Saturday, not a single warship, merchant vessel or oil tanker ventured into the 30-mile wide Hormuz strait, waiting to hear from Tehran' that the test was over.

Hence, they could have entered the straight at any time, however, they were being cautious because of the errant missile.

So you are advocating the use of violence and triggering a war that will escalate and kill innocent people all around the world?

No surprise that Americans are calling for military attacks against Iran. US citizens think they have a god given right to bomb everyone into line. The US motto should be "comply or die". America is like The Borg without the Communism

I advocate destroying Iran’s military capability….sure! I’m not so deluded that I believe a nuclear Iran is somehow a better option for the world. Iran is full of radical Islamists who wish to impose their way of life on the world….worldwide caliphate. I don’t consider them “innocent” like you claim.

They have a barbaric culture. A country that has no problem stoning women to death for adultery and similar crimes should not have the means to kill millions at a time with nuclear weapons.

Funny. In much of the world we think the same of Capital punishment in America, lack of gay rights, child mutilation based on religious principles, animal mutilation based on nothing but convenience - we also fancy you as being religious fundamentalists too.

By most standards the United States is the most archaic and barbaric society in the Western world. Perhaps then Europe should bomb America?

Americans don't seem to understand that they have much more in common with their supposed enemies than you can begin to imagine. I suppose when you do it there's nothing wrong with it though, you're the good guys after all! Nothing wrong with declawing your cat, circumcising your child, stopping gays from getting married, stopping raped women from having abortions, putting people to death, giving people 20 year sentences for robbing a pack of chips(3 strike principle), bombing other nations, being Christian fundamentalists.

You're advanced and moral people eh. At least the Iranian people themselves by in large want change and want to be a democracy with good morals - same can't be said for many of your American brothers who seem to get off on war and theocracy.

I like though how you say "stoning women to death FOR", as if there is ever a justification for stoning or killing a person
You're a moralist of dinosaur proportions aren't you

The Iranis may be calling this meeting to announce they really do have the bomb.....
What if they nuked the straights with the fleet inside it?
Sure we could nuke em back but that would hardly solve things in the long run....just open many more wormy cans.....
Pakistan and India also have nukes and get oil from Iran......
What if Pakistan sides with the Iranis?
Surely we couldnt take em all on without getting at least a bloody nose.....

Would you feel hard done by, offended, insulted, enraged, if the Iranian civilians suggested doing the same thing to the US fleet?

Blah…Blah…Blah…

Your distain for American has blinded you. What a LAME argument!! If you want to equate Iran stoning people to death for adultery to American gay rights issues and circumcisions then you’re REALLY stretching, bud!

That entire post was ridiculous drivel!

They do want to destroy America (and the Jews)!! They’ve been fighting a proxy war against America for 10 years in Iraq. They are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans already. They don’t have the means to destroy our mainland right now, which is why I advocate preventing them from acquiring the means to do so. If they continue to rattle their sabre they will get their head cut off.

It’s going to happen eventually because they are driven to make it happen…they are religiously compelled to do so! Listen to their own words!
