If we can get there and have an energy source, we have no need for the sun.

You say that as if any advanced enough civilization wouldnt take advantage of the resources provided in their solar system? Is there anything more wasteful than not using what has been provided to us for free?

Also, whats wrong with using the resources of a dead planet?

I Agree, but I mean its not like the sun is going any where any time soon. I guess another question is will Jupiter out live the sun? If so, that planet and its moons should be in great consideration, given we haven't developed interstellar travel as a norm by then

The idea keeps popping up in sci-fi. Even the awesome TOHO films did a version of this idea. And that's where my user name comes from.

www.dvdtalk.com...

Set in the year 2125, when space travel and colonization within the solar system is commonplace, Dr. Eiji Honda (Tomokazu Miura) - the character apparently so named in honor both Tsuburaya and director Ishiro Honda - is a scientist working on a project to transform Jupiter into a "second sun," and thus provide energy for colonies established on the outer planets. Plans for this are opposed by a radical religious cult (founded by a bearded former pop star), who repeatedly attempt to sabotage Honda's efforts aboard Minerva, a series of research vessels orbiting Jupiter.

There's something better at Jupiter. There is a huge electron stream around it. Tap that.

We would have to advance to the level of a class-2 civilization for us to be able to do that.Presently we are not even a class-1 yet, which is a civilization that can maintain and control the energy output of its own planet.Your dream may have been a premonition of things to come in the far off distant future of humanity.Or you were semi-consciously remote viewing the type of civilization we once were and the level of technology we once had a long time ago, before the last time we mostly destroyed ourselves, which is something i believe we have done to again and again through the forgotten ages > www.abovetopsecret.com...

Sure, why not.

Also a great place to fill up your party balloons.

However with mankinds track record it will be a few millenia (if ever) that we are ever "topping off" at Jupiter.
