Would pay little attention to such comments, North Korea may have a large army, but they are poorly fed, short and their weapons are often obsolete.

As for nuking the south, well they would just get a nuke straight back so I fail to see how this is a likely scenario

"obsolete" ak's get the job done =D

Well said. I know my 150 year old Martini-Henry makes deer just as dead as a brand new 300 Win Mag.

Yes, all very exciting, but in terms of an army their decrepit weaponry makes them a very unformidable enemy (amongst other things)

Also, we in the west are helping to sustain such regimes as they see various despots being lynched or executed, so it is not like they could just relinquish power gently

During the island hopping campaign in the Pacific in WWII, The Japanese who were (in many cases) completely cut off from supplies, starving and using antique/obsolete weapons were able to inflict massive causalities on the allied forces who stormed the various island. A bolt action rifle from the 1930's will kill you just as easy (easier at range) as a modern assault rifle.

If you are referring to crew served weapons, newer platforms are more mobile but the North Koreans are fighting from dug in positions so that is not a major problem for them. In this case, artillery is artillery and shrapnel is shrapnel. They can destroy Seoul while suffering very little (initial) damage in return. They can't win (or even survive) in the long run and the leaders probably know that, but that doesn't change the fact that they can inflict millions of civilian casualties before they can be stopped. That makes them a formidable enemy.

I agree that they will not relinquish power peacefully. The people must take it.

Perhaps you are unaware of the vietcongs arms and munitions situation?
they had very little modern gear for many decades......3 anyways....They held their own and gave lots back too.....
Only when they tried to fight western style, and massed their forces did they suffer huge losses....mostly anyways....
The NKs have had since 1953 to rearm themselves, and they have .......
They may have second rate gear by comparison, but they are fanatical little devils.....
They are NOT stupid either, lots of things they have accomplished are fairly ingenious...besides the atomic bomb....
I really dont believe they have perfected the ignition system of their nuke quite yet...but may stand corrected if anyone cares to enlighten me....
Their test seemed somewhat of a fizzle i thought.....
This by no means is good news though because the partial nuking of Seol would leave it more than uninhabitable for centuries possibly.....the weapon would be very likely abysmally dirty....(Any expert opinions here would be appreciated).....
Though we have at least one trident sub lurking below the peninsula, well within range of NK, they too have their own sub fleet. They would be out hunting too.....
Japan would be the best aircraft carrier to be using to retaliate rather than risking a carrier within range of their missles, and subs, till we were sure wed got em all....
But the Troops stationed on the Penninsula would stand a very good chance of annihalation ,Nuclear poisoning, chemical attacks, even germ warfare if i am guaging NK right....
This is not looking like wed get away without a scratch....plus 50,000 +/- US service men who stand in harms way.....(My heartfelt concern for you, and your" boys.". Sgt, God Speed all you men/women safely home.....)
We do not need this provocation and it is with regret i shelf any hopes for rapproachment between the two Koreas. The ruling junta there is going to have to be rooted out by its own people when they have had enough starvation................
A flare up of the Korean conflict right now could as easily bring the world to blows as the middle east seems ready to.....
I wonder if Iran, and N Korea are acting in concert this go round?
They make strange bedfellows but the enemy of my enemy etc etc......

Insulting?

North Korea hit South Korea up for money during the funeral...

and the actions of the South are insulting?

Ya know there comes a time when only confrontation will resolve a situation.

Concerted effort? If we look at the world as a chess board, and see where the pieces are positioned, and how those pieces are moved around, its evident there is a concerted effort.

Everytime one particular place seems to occupy the headlines, resulting in a military / policy shift, something else of equal magnitude flares up, resulting in the same response.

The problem I see is its the American military constantly in shift, telling me the plays arent coming from our side. For lack of a better explanation, something is going on and we are being forced to call audibles to deal with it.
