Turkey's air force attacked suspected Kurdish rebel targets across the border in Iraq, the military said Thursday, but Kurdish officials claimed many of the roughly 35 people killed were teenaged smugglers mistaken for guerrillas.

The Turkish military confirmed the Wednesday night raids, saying its jets struck an area of northern Iraq frequently used by the rebels to enter Turkey after drones detected a group approaching the often unmarked mountainous border. It said an inquiry has been launched, but did not say whether there were casualties.

The governor's office for the province of Sirnak _ which borders Iraq _ said 35 people were killed and one other person was injured in the aerial operation.

"Those who were killed yesterday had no links to PKK. They were only smugglers who were on their way back to Turkey from Iraq," Deniz said, referring to the Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers' Party.

If these people involved were "only smugglers", would they not still be guilty of illegal activities? I'm not saying that is a reason to be killed, but they WERE committing a crime.

Before the american colonies rebelled against England, they were just trying to make a living and be prosperous too and they were doing alot of stuff that was considered illegal by the crown at the time. What amazes me is the hypocrisy of the people on this planet. It is ok for one nation to do something and it is wrong for other people to do the same thing? As far as i am concered every nation on this planet has commited crimes against some other nation at one time or another, wether it be warcrimes or outright thievery and stealing their gold and wealth to killing them and persecuting them for their religious beliefs. Nobody is innocent, not one damned person on this planet.

Well said...The whole world has gotten out of control. Governments of one country complain about the activities of another country, and then commit the same act themselves. If the people killed in this attack were "smugglers", they were probably just trying to make some money to feed their families, but crime has risk, and sometimes the risk is death. It's a shame that we live in a world that people are forced to commit crimes (or so called crimes) just to make it.
