www.bbc.co.uk...

What a great idea!! If only they made an app which allowed the rest of us Apes to talk to them too

Goes to show our Ape bothers are more human and so like us.
Good on the zoo

Or is it a marketing thing to open the market to Ape's
guess Apple are gonna accept banana's as payment.

I think it is wrong to introduce an ipad to an orangutan. Seriously, they should let them be animals, release them ffs.

We already know they can understand our language ( signs ), why can't WE learn theirs? We are saying we are smarter, so...

For having had a few birds, I know I could communicate on some level with them, making them react in a way by doing something they themselves did.

Off topic: Mass Effect? Awesome

On topic: It is amazing though what these creatures can learn

Many if we released them would just die off. I think as long as we treat them well it is important to study our close relatives in evolution.
Looks to me they are enjoying it so why not.

There is a lot of research to understand chimp's, they know certain sounds mean certain things, we can tell when they are happy because of a certain sound etc.
One thing is we could help them talk by just messing about with one gene..here
io9.com...
I reckon go for it, I want to be able to go for a pint with a chimp

Off-topic: Yep,Mas Effect!!!
Thanks!

On-topic: And we from them. Nature at every level has solved problems, some we are not even aware, yet. But it would be wrong to think they only have nice things to teach us.

They can also be mean like a grumpy old man, sometimes...

Maybe this one reproduced?

On the other hand, messing with them genetically is like saying we will genetically change the Chinese so we can understand them, so I'm not sure...

OK, it's a little extreme as a comparison, but...

About their problem with letting the animals go with the iPads, why don't they bulid stations that would house the iPads? They wouldn't move, and would be more difficult to break.
Also, if they have fun with it, they will learn to act carefully with it.

I wonder what the psychological implications will be if they are to monitor other groups from other zoos?

PS: I forget the title of the movie, but there was one with a gorilla given a bracelet that would speak aloud the words it would make with signs.
Surely the technology is up to the task, which would also be great for mute people to be understood by everyone.

You're a beaver, you don't have hands big enough, that's why...

Sorry for you though... It happened with last year's MP3 reader of my daughter... I can understand...

I hope they enjoy and ape-reciate the iPad's. They should be easy enough to protect with custom casings, a standard practice with industrial applications, among other things. Not quite sure if orangutans fling their feces around but a cloth should work fine if they do.

Will Skype soon announce new software now called Skyape?

If only they could stop the monkeys from smearing feces on the screens it would be PERFECT!

Hey, it was early so while I might have been scr-aping the bottom of the barrel with my primate-ive attempt at word play I can actually see the orangutans going ape over these iPads, possibly even bananas.
I'll stop now before someone starts throwing something brown at me....

I was wondering if the use of computers by orangutangs would end up making them fatsos...

After all, orangutang means "man of the forest", or something similar.
