i was thinking today about what the internet used to be like in the days of dial up, slow and annoying. but then i remembered all of the people i used to talk to in chatrooms, people from all walks of life, some i made friends with and some were just boring or annoying. i started to wonder why i dont speak to that many of you ATSers in that way and i came up with the idea for this thread....

the way that most people started conversations in the chatrooms was to ask A/S/L? which means age?, sex?, location? im pretty sure it was used mainly to help weed out the women from the dudes but it also created a starting poin for a conversation, sooo

im 25, male and i live in Kent in the UK

I'll bite. I too remember the old chat room days and constantly being asked a/s/l
and I think your right about it mostly being to separate the guys from the girls.

Also I agree that it did open the door to conversation as well.

I don't miss how slow dial up was but I do miss meeting people from all over the world. Sure there is chat roulette but you can't turn it on without seeing strange body parts. What I really miss is user created rooms on yahoo. Lets say I want to discuss a certain band or hobby...instantly you could figure out where this discussion was happening in real time. These forums are good for that too but it's not really in real time...if you miss something or post something that was said, some people act like their head exploded.

Hows things in Canada?
Well, they are good, Christmas is finaly past, we are having a nice mild winter, and there is the standard suppression of REAL news that I think every country is experiencing, which is why I am here.

Here is my local new's latest poll question.
What do you think was Manitoba's top news story in 2011?
1. Jet's return (That's our hockey team)
2. Flooding
3. Winnipeg's homicide record
4. NDP wins again (New democratic Party)

Those are the only choices cause they never report on anything important. I constantly mail them information that I feel they SHOULD be reporting on, but I think they banned my email address.

Other than that, Canada is mostly good.
