Dear TA,

As stated by Mr Muzzy there are no returns. I have to disallow any credit against a future quake however on the grounds that the earthquake in question was very close to the seismo station.

It is quite normal for this size of event to produce a trace such as this at the given distance and depth.

If you have any further questions please contact the Ombudsman and not USGS as they will only give you a further discount.

Regards
Puterman

Ah, the magnitudes scales. Always a problem to get one's head around the differences. The main thing is that the GeoNet Magnitude of 5.582 is Richter Scale (So quaint) and the USGS one and the EMSC ones of 4.7 are mb or body magnitude.

Sometimes ones gets lucky and the USGS phase data happens to have the ML (Richter) and the mb values unfortunately in this case it does not. It would be useful to have a moment tensor for this but I doubt one will be calculated at this size of earthquake.

I suspect that the USGS value is actually lower than the GeoNet value as they usually are, but unfortunately you can't tell because the scales are different. There are conversions between the two scales but they are not easy as the ML (Richter) scale will have been formulated specifically for New Zealand, and possibly specifically for that area.

ML scale calculations are different around the world so unless you know the basis for an area it is not easy to swap scales. Theoretically the results of ML scales around the world should be the same, but I have my doubts on that.
