It's the weekend possibly ? half an eye only monitoring ? - well, it feels like it most weekends when EMSC can look more accurate !

I usually see a knock -on effect after this area in the Ethiopia whereabouts - Djibouti - just an observation / pattern trend on my part , nothing scientific , but think that plate hooks in up there also and it's had a good tap !

Whats the significance of that one

3.3 is pretty small, is it close by your house? don't you get many there?
60 responses is all.

I set my own parameters for posting up quakes from my country to minimum Mag 4.5+ and only then if they were nearby me or I felt it myself, or minimum 100 reponses, or of special interest due to location, part of a swarm or just plain odd.

There was a 4.3 with 340 responses incl 1 x MM6 Slightly damaging in Christchurch, on Sunday NZDT, same day as the 4.7 100km north of me in the South Taranaki Bight that had 165 responses (and USGS called a 4.3mb).
Neither seemed worth posting here.

I know we do get carried away at times the technical stuff here on Quake Watch, but just posting the details without any comment from the poster ............

Here is a link posted by True American in the Cascadia thread showing that this quake is in an area that is pretty thin with previous quake activity.

The link was in response to another poster that said, nothing to look at here, they happen all the time in this area

Time to trot out my guidelines perhaps?

Posting guidelines for Earthquakes in Quake Watch 2012

In order not to clutter the thread with too much relatively small stuff, and leave clearer clutter space for the verbose techie stuff (
), no basically just to make the thread easier to read, the following are suggestions as to what should and should not be posted.

Note these are ONLY suggestions and you are at liberty to post what you wish. Only the mods can prevent you from doing that.

  • All quakes over Magnitude 6.0 for certain. This extends back to high end mb values in the Mag 5 range as they may well become Mag 6 when converted to Mw.
  • Magnitude 5.0+ quakes where the area only experiences this sort of level as a max normally. For example a mag 5 anywhere in the United States is worthy of posting, similarly for New Zealand or Australia but seems relatively irrelevant for say Fiji, PNG or Indonesia most of the time. If you are posting a mag 5+ in an area such as these please indicate why the event is of significance.
  • Magnitude 4.0+ quakes using the above guide, i.e. if this is a significant quake for the area. Any postings of mag 4 quakes ideally should be accompanied by some indication by the poster as to why this quake is of significance.
  • Magnitude 3.0+ quakes only in exceptional circumstances or again where the event is statistically unusual. A mag 3.3 in Ireland for example would definitely be unusual. Personally I do not consider Magnitude 3 to 3.9 events of significance to areas such as California and other US States the exception being earthquakes in this range that would appear to be related to hydraulic fracturing. If you feel this to be the case please state that as the reason for posting.
  • Under magnitude 3 I can't think of any good reason for posting individual quakes BUT swarms of this level certainly should be posted where there may be some volcanic considerations.

Having said all that you can of course post what you wish provided it is on topic, but just don't be too surprised if you get comments for posting mag 1.5 earthquakes in California for example.

Please remember that it is a requirement of the ATS terms and conditions that all external content, which includes earthquake data, must be enclosed in ex tags and have proper attribution.

Yup at 42km deep that one is definitely in the subduction zone and worthy of a mention as if may indicate plate movement.

Perfect example of a smaller quake that is significant. All that was needed was something saying that.

You know if people think a quake might be significant, but are not sure why, just say that. Someone will either agree or disagree and give some reasons.

I don't want ANY member to feel that they CAN'T post, just to give some thoughts as to why you are posting.

Anyhow, I thought that 3.3 EQ was significant . . . glad to see that it probably was according to your reply Puterman. I will be sure to post it correctly with the "External Content tag" next time as I am sure everyone else will from now on . . . got to looking back through the thread and there are so so many that have not.

Sorry to have ruffled your feathers for whatever reason Muzzy. Maybe I will ask before posting in the future, that way I can be sure the experts approve of the content for the thread

Yup, but that is for the mods to sort out. I do point it out from time to time. Best to stay on the right side of them and comply with the T & C!!

But you don't need to ask, just be aware of the guidelines I posted and if you are not sure and think a quake may be significant, or is significant to you - post it - just mention why. That is all we ask.

Pretty good size quake hit the Soloman Islands region, waiting on report...I'll estimate around 6.2..Edit: nah, can't be, I'd be seeing S-waves all over the place. Showed 43 million+ counts though, so wasn't small. Answer: I don't know what size...these counts still screw me up.

Now you are being a smart alec

It took nearly half a page and about 4+ replies from others to clarify why you posted that quake.

I don't give a crap what you post, but will pass over any copy and paste replies from anyone who doesn't make a comment of their own.

I can read lists on USGS, EMSC without having to come here

Look for that Samoa Islands region 5.5mb to go up (largest quake of Day 70)
It looked pretty big on LISS SNZO when I seen it, doesn't show at all on IRIS
but the centroid moment solution is showing 5.9Mw and body wave solution 5.7Mw

right on the edge of FE169, geologically I'd say it had more to do with Fiji and the Tonga Arc than Samoa

weird situation on the graphs.
looks pretty big on LISS AFI,Samoa, HNR, Honiara, RAO, Raoul, SNZO, South Karori, XMAS, Kiritimati Island but small on IRIS (if there at all), the opposite of the Solomon Is 4.8 earlier in the day.
