this is sooo interesting to watch.... i live in N cali.. Hoping this wont work its way towards this area and cause stress on the upper san andreas fault system.... im sure its all gotta be connected somehow... Gotta work at 5am tomorrow... glad i got a few more hours to watch all this unfold before bedtime!!!

The two 4.8's are wrong as listed now, and note those have not been reviewed. I estimate it was one 4.3 or so, again, after the last 4.3.

The SCEC (SoCal Earthquake Data Center) has that one as a 4.6, but the next one as a 4.8:

The global incident map has an impressive array of big red dots, but I see the Cali ones are slowing down now.

Yeah, I reckon they're pretty busy over in ol' USGS right now. And I bet they're grumbling about why this stuff always seems to happen on a weekend or over the Christmas break. (One of the bigger Yellowstone swarms ran over the New Year -- a few years back, I mean.)

And I wasn't really modding with my comment about posting linkies to sources and using ex tags and so on. I was just -- ummm -- kind of doing what I've been doing for years anyway... You know, just a friendly reminder sort of thing.
(And yeah, I forget sometimes myself.)

Oh, I know what you mean! Plenty of times I've had to go back and edit my posts to put in the source attribution.


Back to the main topic (though the attribution side is important), this SoCal swarm is certainly one of the most significant in the region in a good while. We've had sources quoted that suggest similar swarms 40 years ago and also in the 1930s, so I'd be interested if anyomne could do some digging and see how they compared.

I'd do it myself but it's 2:20-something am here and I am beat...

I'm torn as to which seismogram display is giving me the best visual of time, magnitude and duration but I'm leaning towards the Vineyard Canyon one.

Thanks, Olivine. The "tap" was a pleasant surprise. I'm still in the early learning phase so I'm not doing a great deal yet. But it's good to be involved and able to help out in some way.

Also thanks for noting those attributions. If you wish I can check up with a senior mod tomorrow (I mean later today
) and have your post edited to include the info, but I think what you've noted here will probably suffice in this case.

Just before I go...


Sageturkey, there's two things you can try to get more of the image (if you're using a win-based system). One is to hit F11. This should remove any tool bars you have, so the web page fills the entire screen. You can then hit PrtSc to capture as usual. (Just hit F11 again to get your toolbars etc back.)

The second -- if you have a mouse with a wheel -- just hold down the CTRL key and roll the wheel to change the size of the image on your screen. You can then capture at that size.
And you can use this in conjunction with F11.

The station has received reports of earthquakes near the Mexico border.

The plant has been off-line since earlier this year, and there is no safety risk for the public or SONGS employees.

This second declaration follows the protocols set by of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission which also includes notification of state and community partners. All notifications have been made.
