Chin's strict one child law coupled with a prefence for a male child has altered the population mix to the point that there are simply not enough
females for all of the men to marry. The research shows that this disturbing trend of abandoning or outright killing of female children picked up in
the 80's when the government enforced a strict 1 child limit on its population to kep it in check. It seems they got the population controll, but not
how they expected. The redlight areas must be booming!
In 1999, Jonathan Manthorpe reported a study by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, claiming that "the imbalance between the sexes is now so
distorted that there are 111 million men in China -- more than three times the population of Canada -- who will not be able to find a wife." As a
result, the kidnapping and slave-trading of women has increased: "Since 1990, say official Chinese figures, 64,000 women -- 8,000 a year on average
-- have been rescued by authorities from forced 'marriages'. The number who have not been saved can only be guessed at. ... The thirst for women is
so acute that the slave trader gangs are even reaching outside China to find merchandise. There are regular reports of women being abducted in such
places as northern Vietnam to feed the demand in China." (Jonathan Manthorpe, "China battles slave trading in women: Female infanticide fuels a
brisk trade in wives," The Vancouver Sun, January 11, 1999.)
www.gendercide.org...

Even the United nations has taken notice in this 2004 article:
Chinese parents must overcome their preference for boys or risk losing 40 million to 60 million girls to abortion and murder in the next decade,
creating a "huge societal issue," the U.N. resident coordinator in the country, Khalid Malik, said yesterday ahead of the release next week of a
U.N. report on China.
According to official government figures, there are 100 girls for every 116 boys in China. Other estimates put the gender ratio even higher, at 100
girls to 122 boys. In most countries, the number of boys for every 100 girls is between 104 and 106.

From what I understand, the preference of gender is not a qovernment issue; it's a cultural one and partially a consequence of the one child policy
instated by the government.

The one-child policy was established in 1979 to limit communist China's population growth. It limits couples to one child. Fines, pressures to abort
a pregnancy, and even forced sterilization accompanied second or subsequent pregnancies.
It is not an all-encompassing rule because it has always been restricted to ethnic Han Chinese living in urban areas. Citizens living in rural areas
and minorities are not subject to the law. However, the rule has been estimated to have reduced population growth in the country of 1.25 billion by as
much as 300 million people over the past twenty years.
This rule has caused a disdain for female infants; abortion, neglect, abandonment, and even infanticide have been known to occur to female infants.
The result of such Draconian family planning has resulted in the disparate ratio of 118 males for every 100 females (105 males are naturally born for
every 100 females). To reduce such differences, China has recently allowed some parents of a female to try for a male as their second child.
Now that millions of sibling-less people in China are now young adults in or nearing their child-bearing years, a special provision allows millions of
couples to have two children legally. If a couple is composed of two people without siblings, then they may have two children of their own, thus
preventing too dramatic of a population decrease.

I could have told them that back in the 80's.
What do you get if your culture kills all the girl children ?
a) The end of that culture within a generation.
b) Lots of gay men.

Well, it looks like having a patriarchial society combined with a Communist "one child" law will end up solving China's population problems...
perhaps too well.
Do Chinese women live the good life when it comes to boyfriends and husbands? They must get to pick and choose as they please...
I bet you could earn a fortune selling adult magazines & videos in China, if the government allows it... especially with hundreds of millions of
lonely Chinese men out there!
Edit: It appears that the penalty for being caught with pornography in China is death! Geez, then who knows what the Chinese government will do to
you if you're caught with a prostitute...

Yes to the first, but "no" to the second. There's no increase in homosexuality in China.

maybe maybe not:
As one high Chinese official said, "The numbers mean that some people will never have their need for a spouse met, so they move into dangerous
territory". This territory can include, as one Chinese magazine stated, not just kidnapping brides, but prostitution, rape and homosexuality. Urban
crime is on the rise, and experts believe it is perpetrated by the migrant male workers living on the fringes of urban society. Chinese authorities
worry that social deviancy will lead to political unrest. This is where security concerns come into play, both internal security within China and
international security concerns with the United States and China's neighbors.

This 'dangerous territory" could also cause an AIDS spike too to thin out the population as well. I good working girl could rapidly pay off our
national debt

The same thing is happening in some parts of India even now. I don't have the exact numbers, but I think the ratios are 1000 males to 700 females on
average, which is very very low.
When will these people learn? *shakes head and walks away*

I though the reason they prefer boys is so they can serve in the red army.
This is going to be amazing they should use their new found Internet and start looking for brides abroad.
And Chinese girls will have now a better choice of candidates.
This what happened when governments interfere with women reproductive systems.

Very true. Let's look at this from a Chinese guy's point of view: There are no women, and he'll be executed if he's even caught with porn -- so
God help him if he's caught with a prostitute. Sex and love are two of the most basic human needs, and to suppress it with no release at all will
just lead to severe depression. Then, when many try to leave China to search for women and love, they're told they aren't allowed to leave China.
Frankly, I'm surprised there aren't riots in the streets already...

You guys aren't looking it from the cultural view point, just because you live in a society which embraces sex and love, it doesn't mean others have
to too. Maybe China is the kind of country that gives importance to its nation rather than sex, love and money.

"A Nation Without Women" is a bizarre take on this phenomenon, from an Indian perspective. Black comedy but more tragic than comic. Not good form to
ceremonially drown your baby daughters in milk.

My statement wasn't made through a cultural lens... Food, water, shelter, sex, and love are, biologically, the most basic human needs. For you, for
me, for everyone of the species homo sapien.

You mean Native Indians or me like Indians.
I don't agree ThunderCloud, Maybe love is, but sex is the basic need for us, I never said it wasn't need, I am just saying it is not a basic need in
many cultures.
