School under scrutiny after child put in bag

aker said she had been called to the school before more than once to either talk to or take home Christopher, who was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as a first-grader and autism when he was in the third grade.
As she walked toward her son's classroom, Baker said she saw a teacher's aide sitting next to a large green bag that looked like it could be used to hold gym balls. She said the bag, which had only a small hole at the top held taut by a drawstring and a clasp, was moving.

She said the bag, which had only a small hole at the top held taut by a drawstring and a clasp, was moving. Baker said Christopher spoke to her from inside the bag, asking if it was her. After hearing him speak, Baker said she demanded he be let out of the bag, which the aide did with difficulty, struggling to open the drawstring. Baker said she was told he was put in the bag — referred to as a “therapy bag” — because of his behavior. When he got out, Christopher was flustered and sweating, she said.

The reason autistic children exhibit difficult behaviour is because they can't cope. Often they can't understand language to the same degree as other children, and the mere fact that school entails being surrounded by crowds is also a major issue for them. They need kid gloves, special care and patience — basically in the form of full-time specialist support within school, accompanied by teaching staff who are trained to understand the issues and aware of how to make life easier for the child, and for themselves.

Putting any child in a bag and closing the top would be cruel. Doing this to an autistic child leaves me speechless. For a start it would simply generate more confusion and thus worse behaviour. All I can say is: this teacher should receive a severe reprimand, and be offered proper training if he/she wants to continue.

Holy cow! I've just re-read the article and it appears the 'teacher's aide' is the culprit. If this person was specifically employed to meet the needs of that child, and enable him to cope with school life she should be fired.

Frankly the whole school needs investigating if this was going on within its walls.

Charge that person with any and every damn thing that can be thrown at them. Set them up as an example. That's the problem. We need more examples in the world today. Not only should the aid be charged, but the school staff should be fired, every person above that aid should be delt with in ways that will make everyone understand...

They need to stop dealing with just the teachers and aids and start dealing with the whole chain of command. Maybe the faculty will start keeping an eye on how things are being ran around them.

Id put that aid in a bag and take a bat to it...

Its called rebirthing therapy, not fully recognized by the physiology institution as of yet, and should only be done by trained professionals only after the parents have been fully made aware of the risk.

For any school/teacher pulling this stunt should be jailed and fined as well as the school system for allowing this to happen on their property.

Sounds as if you could use a little bag time yourself to keep those violent tendancies under control

By the way this used to be considered a perfectly normal thing in ancient Rome.

It's a tad nicer than handcuffing him with zip ties and taking him to the police station, but not much. It might be the source of claustrophobia in the future for this little lad. It's cruel and unusual punishment, not 'therapy'.

You have not insulted me, but you are insulting children with adhd and autism by saying they are spoiled little brats, and need to have their arses spanked.

I can tell you were born in a time that wasn't so accepting of people with these disorders. I put your birth in the ballpark of 1940-1960. Oh well no big deal, you are just a schmuck.

Oh really now?
No # it isn't the same, but making claims like that is just stupid.

I had adhd for awhile up until grade 10. I couldn't sit still, always wanted to move around and talk.
My parents had awesome parenting skills, best parents I've ever met or heard of. My mom is also a councilor and she has dealt with many kids who have adhd who come from families who are awesome parents.

Just because you don't understand something or refuse to believe it doesn't mean it isn't true.

Your opinion. I see just a special needs kid. I have 4 out of 5 due to my thyroid quitting 100%. chronic fatigue, family history of dyslexia dads side, and not good info from doctors when you're pregnant. But no regrets, glad they're all here, even if I would have gotten fixed on the second had I known. I personally don't care what my neighbors think when the kids act up, they should just be grateful it isnt them and they're probably unqualified to have enough love and understanding to deal with it. By your standards, first acting up and it would be physical abuse , eh?

And the school committed a criminal act of physical harm to the child.

They are paid well by the way, and very highly trained, having access to psychologists, physical therapists, learning assistance, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and basically are not idiots. So they shouldn't be acting like this, eh. They should be acting like professionals and able to deal with the child. I know, my kids are well loved at school, and have lots of meetings with the teams of service providers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, etc etc. For two their apraxia was physical as well and they needed not only speech, no muscles and cottom mouth, couldnt sequence or do language skills, memory faulty, short circuited, but also needed occupational therapy as well.

Learning assistance kids, especially boys, speak out of turn and act up alot. They're hard to take in stores.

I have only the highest respect and positive things to say about the elementary school teams here in BC. Including middle schools.

I'm extremely pro kids, and very friendly to the learning disabled children and their special requirements and the patience, goodness, and positive role modeling it takes to have them turn out loving, not bullied or retaliated against, but gentleness, no matter how long it takes. We are NOT TO TOUGHEN THEM UP, BUT SOFTEN THEIR HEARTS. PERIOD.

I suggest people post like adults and not like children

I hope that's clear. Any more of the type of posts I have removed and further action WILL be taken on peoples accounts.

I have a hard time understanding your first response. I don't have any of these disorders, and I got my ass kicked as a kid growing up. This did teach me how to be respectful the quickest, and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. That being said, this is NOT the way a child with Autism or any disorder for that matter should be treated, EVER. For you to say what you did shows you are very immature yourself. I'm 21 years old, and can proudly say I am definitely more mature, respectful, and probably most certainly more trustworthy than a man like yourself. You must be one of those bad guys, and I thank you for that. If it wasn't for you, kind moralist people wouldn't be so cherished. To me, you are the same as the teaching aide spoken about in the OP.

Oops this was in response to DAVESMART's first post. Sorry.
