In the light of recent earthquakes that hit South Island NZ and surroundings,I think this is a legitimate question.
The scientists predicts for 2012 a large earthquake for Christchurch and New Zealand.I know this sound scaremongering prediction,but what if that smell of sulphur emanating gas is the sign that something the size of Atlantis could happen next year.

Nobody want's something like that.But in the same time no one can see the real signs of such a big event in time.
What if the people are warned and they don't care.
Before every big event there were scientists to warn of a big EQ and nobody listen.We don't need heroes after war,we need to save lives.

Together, they have released an information paper today. Commenting on the paper, Sir Peter Gluckman said: “There is understandably a lot of interest and concern around Christchurch’s recent and future tectonic events. There is a wide range of scientific effort already underway and being planned to help Christchurch and New Zealand as a whole to design, plan and build the engineering needed to deal with the risks we face.” The information paper is based on expertise from a range of specialist groups working in this area including the University of Canterbury, GNS Science, Victoria University of Wellington, and the Natural Hazards Platform, a collaborative research programme hosted by GNS Science. It is designed to provide answers to concerns about the Christchurch earthquake and the risks for the future

I don't want to predict anything,all I do is to ask If something like that might be happening in the short run. .

Hopefully if something that catastrophic were to occur, the government should force the NZ civilians onto airliners/military aircraft and transport them over here to Australia. THat would be the best option in my opinion

I think this happens more often than not. Seems that the mentality of "that will never happen to me" rains true.

Ive got an uncle who has been working in NZ ever since the first earthquake doing insurance claims. He believes that many residents of Christchurch will never return to their homes, kind of like sections of New Orleans. Ive also got some mates from NZ who are scared to go back, and probably never will. Some say Mother Nature is pissed, i say we dont have a clue yet

If the government will take the matter seriously ,then even such a big scale evacuation with big costs,will be done.

I didn't see in the entire history of the humanity an evacuation before an earthquake.Why?I don't know!
