Unsettling. A strange "stuff" growth like a "spider web" or a "white lint" on nuclear waste in Savannah River Nuclear Site and it is still unknown. May be biological.

Scientists at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site — a nuclear reservation in South Carolina — have identified a strange, cob-web like "growth" (their word, not ours) on the racks of the facility's spent nuclear fuel assemblies. According to a report filed by the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, "the growth, which resembles a spider web, has yet to be characterized, but may be biological in nature." The Augusta Chronicle reported today that the "white, string-like" material was discovered amidst thousands of the spent fuel assemblies, which are submerged in deep nuclear storage pools within SRS's L Area Complex. email

Could we be dealing with a new and unknown species of extremophile?

I wander how strange is Life and in wich extreme environments growth....

Aliens containing it so we all dont die from radiation. Like the leak in Japan that spread to the sea and the coral reefs. That we never hear about because its not humans in danger

Must be some kind of organic one would surmise....Physicists dont predict such a reaction that i know of...
It would be interesting to hear more about the stuff....maybe it could eat radiation for dinner?
