I was just thinking that LOL! I was on arpa through control data in 1978 using my little TTY43 and an acoustic coupler. Remember way back then... when only intelligent life swam in the seas of electrons? None of this big business, dot com advertising crap and spam? Way back when you could almost count the number of websites on your appendages ;-) and the internet (arpa) was made up of universities, the military, hackers and porn sites. Damn it's so long ago now....

the internet is not what is used to be for sure - i recently read that a stanford law professor (barbara van schewick, author of internet architecture and innovation) condemned verison for restricting an application "google wallet" from being used on a new phone - that was on 12.19.11 - you can read more here: www.savetheinternet.com...

i am not a fan of google analytics either - this tracking actually works against my research - for some reason i don't get the same results i used to way back yonder -

i'm certain you have heard google recently announced a new social media data hub which allows social media sites to send data to google analytics - cutroni.com... - too much personal information imho - might be good for business i suppose - but then again - this infomation would most likely end of at a fusion center - www.dhs.gov... - we know all about these centers positioned to empower front-line enforcement agencies for our protection -

yes, the internet used to be free - put in place by the military - let's not forget this little nugget -

it certainly has grown and driven by greater amounts of information increasing our knowledge and possibly gaining some wisdom which, of course, we all know is the right application of our understanding from this knowledge - en.wikipedia.org...

I was at the Consumers Road address (Victoria Park and the 401) in North York for the company I worked for, I'm an engineer. The company wanted me to start bringing them mainstream (for the times) and I moved from project manager to expert systems analyst, so I was at Control Data to familiarize myself with their systems and access to arpa and then look at insertion into new markets and advertising methodologies. That was back in 1978/79. I used a tty43 (like a printer and typewriter in one) and a 150/300 baud acoustic coupler to link up through Control Data to arpa. A couple of years later I had CBM's, Apple's and then a couple of years after that I was using the first generation MSDOS machines. Baud rates jumped from 150/300 to 1200 to 9600 and then 14400 in about 4 years. My first Apple had a 5mb hard drive ($2000), two 8" floppies @ 1mb each ($225 each used), 2 5-1/4" floppies and a 192kb RAM card LOL and that was huge at the time.

But it was different for us way back when, I was brought up in the days where you worked with what you had, you made seriously compact code in assembly language and if something wasn't available, you made it yourself or you hacked what you needed. It's funny, in my spare time I remember playing star trek and dungeons and dragons on the ridiculously slow tty43, while reams of paper shot out over the edge of my basement bar LOL. Nothing like the technology we have today. I used to run BBS systems as well using PC Board and others way back in the early 80's.
