Moscow, eyeing U.S. missile defense plans, announces work on 100-ton “monster” missile

news.yahoo.com

During campaign season, it never hurts for a presidential candidate facing a frustrated public to display toughness and resolve in the face of an old and familiar adversary. And it also doesn't hurt to throw in some shock-and-awe--say, an intercontinental ballistic missile nicknamed "Satan."
This appears to at least partly explain why on Monday Russia announced that it had successfully tested a short-range interceptor missile; part of its ongoing effort to develop a domestic missile defense.....

hmmm...
Now that's something to make ya think!

What the heck has got into these Russians lately!
Oh!
I know what it is....
America's missile defense build-up because the U.S. has chosen to ignore Russia's concerns over it.
I have posted a link to a thread above that I started on 16-12-2011 that relates to this issue.

Are we really going to start the cold war pissing contest all over again?
Come on guys! Can't we all just get along?

Only 100 tons? and called "Satan"?....pfft...

The Soviet era R36 Satan ICBM (NATO SS-9 & SS-18) isn't exactly new either, what with it having been deployed from the end of 1975, and weighing in at 200 tons!!!!

not knowing details about this 'satan' missile, but it sounds a bit confusing if someone starts thinking into missile defense and having a 100-ton missile in mind.

the regular known-to-work defense system is a fast small missile fired against its target.

A 100-ton missile is more that sort of missile making someone capable lifting larger satellites into orbit, which must not necessarily be military equipment.

Since still relying on technology developed in the 60's (soyuz), and laying off Buran/Energiya in the 80's its just normal to see the russians appear with some new heavy-lift capacity now, cause they,- as a nation who had a leading role in spaceflight in history-, have a need of being independant from europe.

These are the people who control our lives. They are like children. I find it truely terrifying that our fate lies in their hands. They are more interested in spending billions to make make terrible weapons, rather then spend that money on something worth while. They brainwash their fellow country to believe that patrioism for your country
is the most important thing, not patrioism for being a human being.

Russia signaled 9 months ago that they weer looking at developing a brand new missile by 2013, but you'd have to think that a development of their current fleet seems more likely that something completely new.

however recent testing might not have ben too successful! - and given this purported test was of a MIRV warhead designed to defeat interceptors (which usually means manouvreable "stealth" warheads + decoys) I wonder if this is actualy what all the fuss is about?

Given that the RS-24 has only been in service for less than 2 years it seems likely that the sabre rattling is refering to an upgrade of it.

This is moving from absurd to the realm of patently ridiculous. The US Missile shield Russia is so concerned about couldn't pose any defensive measure against a RUSSIAN attack in our wildest fantasies and they darn well know it.

If Russia wants to be intellectually honest in their objections and come right out and say it's blocking Iran and other Russian client states they are mad about, fine, but this is just outright lying to the world to suggest it's a Russian issue. It isn't and never could be at this small scales.

Our Missile interceptors, first, don't even WORK with enough of a hit ratio to call it a proper system one can sit with confidence behind while missiles are actually in the air. More importantly though...it's a limited number of shots and those don't run into the hundreds for a single engagement. Russia could fill the skies with HUNDREDS on the launch phase and THOUSANDS on the re-entry phase with MIRV warheads. That would leave our "Missile Shield" crews throwing in the towel and running for cover anywhere OTHER than the target of one of those incoming warheads.

So... Putin can make all the hay about this he'd like. It's B.S. and posturing. Since Star Wars was basically killed outright, there hasn't been a workable defense system on the drawing boards for a RUSSIAN attack and again, everyone who needs to know that, DOES know it.

Russia needs to take some Prozac if they seriously think our NMD program is geared towards them. There is no system on this planet that count counter an arsenal the size of the the Soviet Union... errr Russia..

Whatever excuse they need to use I guess.

I have heard that they (China or Russia) have large missiles that have numerous smaller missiles in them, where one missile breaks into dozens upon dozens of other nuclear missiles. All launched from a high altitude and rocketing at hypersonic speed, many times faster than the speed of sound. Until that launch, the missile, in of itself, is stealth. The Rocket is shot into low earth orbit and the smaller missiles deploy towards their target from numerous directions making it much tougher to stop all.

This was designed as a multiple surgical EMP type weapon, where the smaller missiles detonate over specific areas of the country to create an EMP burst over several hundred miles, mostly to knock out major cities. They could essentially take out a vast percentage of the country, surgically, with one of these.

All Hearsay though...

That tech has been around quite sometime.......and Russia and China arent the only ones who have it. In fact, the US is the one who pioneered it.

The missile shield IS aimed at Russia. Nobody believes for a second it's aimed at Iran or North Korea.

The interceptors can be launched from air, sea and ground. That's possibly tens of thousands of interceptors missiles against a few hundreds ICBMs. And technology in interceptors is getting better fast... Russia is thinking into the future. They have been caught with a surprise attack during WW2 and it nearly wiped them off the map, so they are not taking any chances.

Russia has many warheads, but are limited in the number of MISSILES under the START treaty.

A coordinated NATO first strike against Russia could defeat a lot of those missiles on the ground... then those left can be taken out with the missile shield... with acceptable losses of course. (who cares, it's only sheeples that gonna die anyway, right?)

Anyway, this new plan by Russia is stupid, big (bigger target, slower to reach space) and liquid fueled (missile needs to be fueled before launch, which takes a while)... this is because Russia still have their USSR-era missile scientists running the show. They love big missiles... they still think they are in the cold war where yield is all that counts...

Anyways this doesn't help Russia... and is just a domestic propaganda coup.

And it also doesn't hurt to throw in some shock-and-awe--say, an intercontinental ballistic missile nicknamed "Satan."

That is bull. The ``western analysts`` already have a Russian missile nicknamed Satan. It's called the SS-18.

No really its not geared towards Russia. No NMD system on this planet can defend against an arsenal of that size, which includes, aside from fixed launch sites, mobile ICBM's as well as submarine and air launched. Since a nuclear capable sub could sit 12 miles off the coast of the US, there is no way a NMD system can intercept those inbounds, let alone evacuate key people from various locations to ensure continuity of government.

Hence the reason for the original ABM treaty, which only protected the Capitals of each nation, as well as the acronym MAD, which is just as relevant today as it was during the height of the cold war.

Our concern is not a Russian or even Chinese missile attack. Both countries have demonstrated a doctrine of MAD or a variation of it. Its countries like Iran or N. Korea or Thailand whose programs aren't geared towards a MAD concept. They are geared towards a philosophy of use them or lose them.

Even with a NMD system in place, it still does not offer a deterrent against sneaking material from a rogue nation into this country and pulling a move out of the sum of all fears.

People dont seem to comprehend that its not the notion of mutually assured destruction that worries us. Its not having the entire northern hemisphere irradiated. Its the one nuke that sneaks by.. Setting off one nuke would clear the way for a response, however anything more than one for one in this case would be lose lose for everyone involved, even the responding country.

Hypothetical -
If Iran or North Korea were able to detonate one nuclear weapon in the US, do you really think the world response would approve of the US carpet bombing either nation with more than one nuke?

Hence the irrational yet stabilizing effect of MAD.

We arent concerned about the country with thousands of nukes... What scares the hell out of us is a country with very few nukes who are not concerned about a MAD doctrine and who places very little on human life.

If people dont think Russia or China have their own NMD systems, then they are crazy. One of the bonuses of being in charge of a government that is able to control the media is the fact you dont hear about China or Russias systems, just the US.

american general staff and the elite do not care about civilians Sir. They have their bunkers and planes and if some conspiracylogists were to be believed much more advanced platforms.

Do you have evidence for NMD system in Russia?
