Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he has warned American officials that his government is "serious" about selling Canadian oil to Asian markets, after a U.S. political fight put the Keystone XL pipeline project on hold.

The pipeline has been delayed as U.S. President Barack Obama seeks more environmental assessments before deciding whether to give the project the green light. He has put off making a decision until after next year's elections.

That's a first.
Harper having a mind of his own, and looking for Canada's best interest, not environmentally but economically.

Then gas prices will increase to $10 a gallon further weakening the dollar and accelerating the economic crisis

Thats just friggen wonderful. Obama's talent at mismanagement doomed the Gulf oil industry by his game playing with saying 'no permits'..then 'yes, you can have permits...but...' to whatever it is today. Just enough screwing around to watch rigs leave our waters for a very long time while they work elsewhere.

Now we're seeing the same thing with the OTHER decent shot we have at affordable oil in THIS hemisphere. What is next? Oh yeah... He's attacking the coal industry with everything the EPA can throw at it. Sorry I asked.

Hmmm seems like we need to move some heavy armor along the northern boarder, Those Canadians should know by now what we're willing to do to secure our oil

Harper throwing a political bone to the GOP?

Don't count on it.

Look up Article 605 of NAFTA. It isn't going to happen. It would require us to leave or fundamentally alter NAFTA and that isn't going to happen either..

Spoke with the brother inlaw the other day about this very thing because he is in the oil business and he mentioned that if the pipeline was to go to the west coast . There would be a lot of native indians that the gov would have to smooth over for it to cross their land .

What part of 605 do you feel it goes against? Seems that Canada can do exactly as they are saying. Even if they were found in breach, they could sell to Asia while it played out in a NAFTA court.

The only way it could happen if our exports to the US don't fall below the 36 month average. If taking that oil and selling it to Asia put us under that, we could and would be forced to stop until it played out in a court.

The US will have to tap into some of those untold riches on their own soil it looks like . You wana see some quakes from the fracking then on the eastern slopes of the rockies . That's my prediction .

Thanks for posting that

Could the creating of more volume effect that number, there buy creating a situation where they could sell to other markets?

Obama is sitting on the fence with no intention of jumping off on to either side. Harper, regardless of my opinion on him, definitely has a mind of his own and will do whatever it takes to keep Harper's agenda moving along.

IMHO he would probably see himself in a higher regard than the whoever the US president is, that just seems to be his ego. There is a reason he is portrayed at times in political cartoons up here wearing a crown and cloak.

If Harper wants to put his butt in the fire with land issues . He may get more than a slight tan if you know what I mean .

They may rake him over the coals but there are other routes to explore . Just what is Harper willing to give away ?
