Is mankind secretly happier being controlled?

I don't know if it's about being controlled, rather than having clearly defined structures and boundaries. The only thing that seems to stop our general descent into anarchic chaos in the Western world is the system of law, rights and responsibilities.

The old Hindu caste system was a structure (albeit greatly flawed) that neatly put everyone into their little economic and social categories, and people cohabitated for thousands of years knowing what they were supposed to do, etc. etc. The part they got wrong was the whole vertical rather than horizontal hierarchy.

Don't you think there's a way of having just enough rules to avoid total chaos while allowing freedom, even if sometimes there's a bit of chaos?

...isn't that sorta what we have right now?

Of course people like to be controlled. This is why the term "sheeple" exists.

We are creatures of fear, and most people are ruled by it.

Fear of being different is rampant and incredibly visible in this day and age.

People are much happier not having to make the tough decisions for themselves. When faced with a deep ethical or moral decision, what happens? Apathy. Litigiousness. Prejudice. Greed. Hate.

Disheartening.

Trick question. Most humans, yes, they want to be controlled. In fact many humans need to be controlled(hence why some support rigid laws for the sake of rigidity). Then you have people who are out of control, many of these people do wish to be controlled.

Of course though, there is a sizable segment of the population that doesn't want to be controlled and are perfectly capable of controlling themselves.
