Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., embarked on a 24-hour hunger strike in solidarity with four Occupy DC protesters who have gone without food since Dec. 8 to advocate for D.C. voting rights. Ellison, the first Muslim to serve in the House, met with the hunger strikers Thursday and pledged to read their declaration – which calls for full voting rights for District residents as well as legislative and budget autonomy – on the floor of the House of Representatives to enter it into the congressional record.

What a doofus. Going on a hunger strike for 24 hours is about the most retarded and empty gesture I can imagine. Oh no, a whole day! I hope he knows what he's doing, sounds dangerous. I'll give the people going on 9 days props though.

No one was talkign about these four people before this "empty" gesture so I take that for what that is worth.

edit, Or should I view the OP from an anti OWS point of view?

The OP thinks OWS is a joke but gives them credit for trying to do something.

Good point. Still an empty self promoting gesture though in my eyes.

So why can´t you give this guy credit, for sticking out his head, unlike his peers, and bring attention to these hunger strikes, as the other poster pointed out.

I hadn´t heard about them.

Because read the post above yours. He's not sticking his neck out at all.

I think he is, like I said none of his peers seem to openly support OWS, at least to my knowledge, so among them, he sticks out his neck.

I don't consider it sticking out his neck. What would the negative consequences be, other than growling stomach?

Jeez I reaally need to spell it out, don´t I.

He might put his reputation on the line and face ridicule from his peers or certain aspects of the media.

Like people calling him a doofus on the internet.

As an OWS supporter, I have to agree with OP, a 24 hour hunger strike is an embarrassment. I have gone 24 hours without food plenty of times for no reason. The school children I met in Africa that hadn't eaten in two days, not on purpose, would laugh at this guy if he thinks he's BA for this.

I'm a little insulted. I think I am very mature for 15.

Publicity stunt. Also - the guy is behind the times. OWS is now a joke and just a sad shadow of what it started out to be. Here's an idea .. he could send the food he didn't eat for a day to Angelina Jolie ... she's another 'look at me I'm not eating' publicity hound supposedly for 'a good cause'.

Hmm while 24 hours isn't much, he's got people talking about it and so far that and the Occupy Amendment has been the strongest support shown from any government officials. That's something, altruistic or not.

More childish instigating?

I clearly pointed out that his 24 hour hunger strike is not really impressive, but I just want to distinguish the fact that he is bringing attention to OWS while putting himself outthere as supporter of OWS.

What do you think this guy´s ulterior motive is then, and how many days of hunger strike would it have taken for this guy to be legit in his motives?

Are you not being the one who is childish, chatting down to a 15 year old like that.
Maybe give some respect and you will receive some respect back.

It is obvious this guy is doing this for publicity hence what I said earlier, there will be a Big Mac at the end of it all once he has done his so called 24 hours hunger strike. If he was being serious then why not go and sit with those who are doing this hunger strike and sit it out with them.
