Beware the convetional wisdom. At the time Jane Fonda enjoyed considerable support from the troops themselves. The following excerp comes from the book "Who Spoke Up? American Protest Against the War In Vietnam 1963-1975" by Nancy Zaroulis and Gerald Sulliven(Doubleday and Co, 1984):

"On May 15, 1971, Armed Forces Day... antiwar actions occurred at nineteen bases, including air force and navy bases. ... In San Diego, nearly fifteen hundred members of the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Constellation signed an appeal requesting that the Jane Fonda FTA* show be allowed to be presented on deck. Although Bob Hope's USO show was always allowed on board, Fonda's was not. However, her appearance in San Diego drew four thousand people, a majority of them in the armed forces."

*meaning "Free the Army" (though there is a more profane variation)
