Hi, I found this a funny topic and thought maybe just for good sport we could rattle our minds and think of reasons why this whole drone-incident could have taken place.

I listed 5 scenarios of the top of my head (and sometimes with the help of others' heads).

Since this thread is purely speculative the likeliness of any of these events is irrelevant so no need to argue.

1. Mistake

You made a mistake, crashed and lost your drone.

2. Deceiving the enemy

You "lose" a low-tech drone to a potential enemy and pretend it to be high tech. They will now underestimate your technology

3. False flag

You "lose" a drone in desired enemy territory while flying there without permission. Off course you won't get it back. Tensions rise and you'll have an excuse to invade.

4. Selling something at a better price

You "lose" your drone which supposedly has the same tech as the new fighter jet you are about to sell. You say you'll improve the jet but the price will go up. (No truth needed)

5. Taken over

The drone you flew over enemy territory got hacked by the enemy and they captured it.

6. Placed a bug or virus in the software to infect systems when studied.

you should add "trojan drone", perhaps it is SUPER-hi-tek, in the sense that it's connected to GPS or some kind of tracking device that could lead the US to discovering new underground or warehouse facilities in Iran trying to uncover new types of techs since one would assume they would take it to one of those types of places to get this drone's technical readout. They certainly aren't going to drop it off at Iran's version of Geeksquad.

more than likely it just malfunctioned though and tailspun right into the ground.

6. So you can ask them to return it ,kiss and make up and move on to another country

Obama asks for drone back from Iran

6. Mission Accomplished

Drone fabricated for this specific mission, to be easily captured inside enemy territory, and has provided many essential intelligence gathering opportunities, along with tracking, and spread of malware.

Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

7. Has a self-destruct feature on there to blow up you enemy.
But before it does,it plays the theme song from mission impossible.

My thoughts drone.. The drone is known and current tech, anything extremely sensitive was damaged or disabled before flight. It is equipped with all kinds of Trojan horse devices, maybe even a lethal biological virus payload inside to kill off those trying to study it. Lost drone is also used as a false flag to say " they hijacked the signal" so they could fly a "nuclear equipped" drone in the US allowing us an excuse to start WW-III. Ready?

hm.. you could also "loose" a drone in order to give an excuse for gvmnt to accept the purchase of a newer better version , unattractive due to the recession.

Ok, ok, I know it's FOX news, but they've got some stuff on this that I haven't heard before:Drone crash theories

While intelligence officials are investigating a handful of scenarios to explain the lost CIA drone now held in Iran, Fox News has learned that a leading scenario is that the drone went into a default setting for an automatic landing pattern.

Two intelligence sources, who work cyber issues, say the other scenarios include a catastrophic or navigational malfunction that caused the RQ170 to break contact with its base. But that scenario is problematic, the sources said, because it does not fully explain the "soft landing, one where it lands and lands well, not scratched up."

Under a third scenario, which is described as "plausible, but remote," the drone's data stream was compromised or jammed. One U.S. official emphasized that there was "no evidence of jamming" or that "hostile fire took down the drone."

Really, there's more, interesting stuff in the article. It's worth looking at.

8) Remember that drone "virus" recently at the control center ?
Hmmmmm............

Sounds like a new multi-zillion dollar contract is needed.

Exclusive: Computer Virus Hits U.S. Drone Fleet

9) Obama arranges the whole thing with his friends in Iran.

He later performs another 'miracle" and gains popularity.

How about:

We already told you the software was dodgey in the drones....

Our new current 'enemy' has our drone....

So the US Govt does another 9/11 with it's own drone's and blames Iran

(Detroit is almost Bankrupt, No longer the 'city of dreams', over 1/3 empty,...
but probably a good insurance payout)

Yes. Also in the run up to 2012, the "Iranians" will have "decoded the signal" so as to take over our entire drone fleet. The x-47b drones are said to look like UFO's... so there will be "UFO hysteria" to boot. Whether or not the UFO phenomenom turns out to be "true" (in the press) or not remains to be seen.

I think we might have another possibility...

Drone strike in "US Friendly regions” or on US soil and they blame Iran for using their drone… aka False Flag anyone?
