Army slashing 8,700 jobs as budget cuts begin

The cuts will come in 37 states at 70 different locations across eight commands and agencies with nearly 90 percent of the cuts taking place within the Installation Management Command, Army Materiel Command and the Training and Doctrine Command. Most of the cuts are likely to occur in Virginia and Texas, where most of the DOD’s civilian workers are located.

Here's the thing about this news: If the Army is slashing jobs and trimming its budget ... why are they HIRING “Internment / Resettlement Specialists.”

Hiring “Internment / Resettlement Specialists” must be important because they are seeking them from among both “Active Duty” as well as “Army Reserve.” (See "additional news links")

And, of course, they are hiring them despite cutting spending and other jobs. What gives?

Something to do with the National Defense Authorization Act of 2012, perhaps. Or maybe I am just being utterly paranoid.

The war in Iraq is ending and much of the civilian contractors that were hired throughout the conflict are having their contracts ended. These things aren't open ended. Secondly MOS 31 Echo has been around a long time. It isn't new.

We're still fighting in Afghanistan and we are still capturing insurgents and combatants.

See above. Civilian contractors are NOT necessary to combat readiness.

Can anyone show me ONE shred of proof (that isn't from Alex Jones) that these "Internment Specialists" are being hired?

Can you show me anything besides the supposed memo floating around that has been pretty well debunked already as being false?

If all this stuff is out there, surely it should be easy to prove...yet nobody seems to be able to do that.

Good is about time this happened.

The the military work for themselves. There is no reason to have civilian contractors other then to line the pockets of the senators friends.

I always hated having to go to the contractors when i was in the USMC it was the most wasted part of my day

Almost 9,000 people unemployed is never a good thing. especially for the families of these people.

That is also a good chunk of state and federal tax revenue gone from the system.

Its not so much a budget cut as it is just going back to pre 911 spending levels. Before the DoD was given almost unlimited funding and the freedom to do what ever they wanted with the money.

If someone thought they where good enough to work for the best military in the world they should be able to get a job anywhere else... or they will just come back one a new contract with a different name.

The states should stop relying on the bases and smaller commands to support their budgeted spending.

Let the Military take care of their own they have people that are trained in MOSs that do the same job as the contractors for half or usually less the half the money. that should take a nice chunk out of gov spending

I've often advocated this. Over the last 30 years many Military Occupational Specialties have been axed and outsourced to private companies which have caused the military budget to balloon. People often talk about how big the military budget is, but I assure everyone that most of that money is lining someone's pocket and has little to do with black projects, military readiness, or weapons acquisitions.

If those MOS's were brought back to within military ranks the US Military could save hundreds of billions of dollars.

8700 out of over a million in the armed forces?

USA spends more than the rest of the top five combined on its military. I'd say it's more than overdue for a massive spending cut back.

I guess the army is always last to do anything. The AF started cutting contractors last year. The AF had civilian gate guards at U.S. Bases, and very poorly equipped at that. Now the regular US AF security forces are back. some things have been changing that I see everyday driving though the gate. The Navy has also been cutting back on civilian contractors also. So cutting 8700 jobs is very much in order for the Army. The U.S. Military does not need civilian contractors very much any more. At first I know this was all about boot on the ground in the ME ,well the boot are returning. tax payers can not forever sustain this war chest of funds.

A Hindu-Islamic Cult in Arizona called 3HO (with their own Compound) started bribing politicians and next thing you know....Federal Contracts. One of the first was the Oklahoma Federal Building. After they failed to secure that they renamed their Security Company and got many many more Federal/Military Security Contracts.

They got the job because they were lining peoples pockets. It would have been cheaper to pay lowly E-2's and E-3's to Guard the bases. Politicians were robbing the piggy bank.

The Army could fund itself if it did it's 1 Core Task. Protect the States from Invasion. There's what....40-50 million illegals in the US? If Corporations weren't making so much money off of them....the Army could get them and make money processing them in or out.
