NYPD officers have fun with racist Facebook group

Officers within the NYPD allegedly typed racist and revealing comments on a public Facebook page seemingly undetected until a New York attorney uncovered them.

“I say have the parade one more year and when they all gather drop a bomb and wipe them all out,” writes one commenter, Dan Rodney. The New York Times first broke the story and reached out to Rodney, who confirmed that he was a police officer and a user of Facebook but denied that he made that comment.

The image of the police in America these days isn't looking too good. You would think they would be a bit more careful. When we find out that some of our police officers are racists we have to question every arrest made. Personally, it disgusts me how can we trust that evidence isn't tampered with or planted to make someone who is of a culture the arresting officer despises?

I wonder how West Indian, non-white or non-racist members of "Bloomberg's personal army" feel about this discovery. My question to good honest cops everywhere...how do you feel and what do you do when you see this type of behavior?

I think a lot of them just don't care, because they have a lot of nets that will catch them if they make a mistake.

I had the pleasure of having a similar discussion with a couple of people here that work in Law Enforcement. I tested what kind of responses I got both on an emotional and logical level. I believed what they had to say and I was quite pleased to know the 2 that I talked with were in law enforcement, their answers surprised me a little bit. Unfortunately not one single police office would respond to the post. I am almost positive this is due to the systemic corruption that is associated with police men in general but not all that are in law enforcement. Here is the thread if you would like to look at it.

After talking with those 2 people I do believe there are good people in law enforcement but I also believe, due to the amount of material I have seen and read about police brutality, corruption and the treatment of OWS that the ranks of policemen are corrupted much more than I had previously thought and probably more that the upper management of law enforcement realizes. I also think it is only a matter of time, due to the actions of the rank and file that citizens start firing back in mass.

I agree, of course there are good officers in law enforcement. Innocent little kids still play the good "guy" as cops after all and I refuse to believe that at some point that innocence turns into malice in all cases. I think we're left to wonder how far that malice goes, how wide spread is it and do good officers want to do anything about it or does "brotherhood" come first?

Ironically, this will do far more harm to Facebook than it will to the NYPD.

When will people learn that 'social networking' is just another form of societal monitoring.

I'll be honest. Brotherhood will only carry you until you intentionally harm another because of bigotted views. If you make an off color joke, that can slide. If you talk about dropping a bomb on a group of people to wipe them out, something is getting reported up the chain. If I have tangible evidence that you have targetted someone based solely on their race or religion, it gets reported up the chain.

I personally will not stand for it. Reading reports like this make me sick. I hate corrupt cops in a way that I can not explain. The role of the cop is that of the protector. To violate that trust and role is one of the worst things a person can do.

While I do not approve, I will not judge either.
There are racists everywhere, in all professions and walks of life.
Heck even I have my prejudices, but that is my right as long as thoughts are not a crime.
That should not matter whether I was a plumber, cop or burger flipper.
As long as you do your job, believe what you want.

I make horribly offensive jokes all the time. I have a fairly morbid sense of humor but my morals are still fairly intact. Cops are notorious for dark/racist humor just like medics and doctors. If they do their job who cares?

My thinking is that racism is not rational. It's completely irrational to hate a person based off their skin color or culture. If an officer is irrational in that manner how can we trust that he/she performs their job effectively and honestly. Cops are in a position that requires extreme trust they have the power of prison or freedom in their hands, an irrational mentality is capable of planting evidence in my opinion to "get rid of the problem".

If the ones making the racist jokes actually are racist we have a problem and with all the corruption lately in the NYPD it is worth looking into. The FBI has been busting the NYPD left and right.

Well, if said person plants evidence or does other unscrupulous activities, they have crossed the threshold from bigot to criminal.
But until said activity has been proven, we should not prosecute them for our beliefs.
Protect yourself and let the bigots be.

I'd agree that it's very irresponsible considering their job titles ... but I've heard army persons and similar occupations talk like this, including security people. Often I think they see the worst of people, and sometimes jump to conclusions etc ... or vent.

Not saying it's correct, not saying it's responsible, but I've met a good few persons that talk like this but they consider it just a joke or trash talking and don't seem to carry it on in the rest of their lives. I think any time a bunch of macho persons get in a room together these types of things end up said unfortunately.

I am glad to hear this from you. I respect almost all opinions and try to learn from them. I am also glad to have been able to talk with the people in law enforcement that I have been able too. their job is not easy and it can be a doubled sided coin for them and me. I know more about things than I did three days ago but to be honest, the reason I asked my questions, which were similar to the ones posted here were because I saw some lady come on here claiming she was a spouse of a LEO. Her reply to a persons post was essentially "you and every scumbag my husband arrests do not have any rights because my husband is risking his life just doing his job"

I asked the questions I asked because the alternative would have been exposing her...and him and I am willing to bet she is nothing but a drunk lush.

I don't know how to say thise without sounding very un-pc. If my wife spoke out of line like that I would definitely set her straight.

Unfortunately the spouses of LEOs are usually worse than the LEOs. They spend a lot of nights worrying. Plus communication about what happens at work isn't very good. When the shift ends nobody really wants to explain their day. If you're not involved in it you don't understand. So, any attempt to communicate things is labor intensive. After twelve hours on shift you just want time to relax and forget about the people you dealt with. That leads to a lot of wives being resentful and many take it out on those they percieve as criminals, or the job. They feel those two forces have taken their husband and destroyed their lives.

Many of them don't handle it well. That is one reason that many LEO marriages end in divorce. I also believe that may be why that lady lashed out. She was probably lashing out at the percieved cause of her unhappiness instead of addressing the real issue.
