Typical orbit of a GPS is 22,000 miles

nope, lower than that. GPS satellites are in an orbit 20 200km (12 600 miles). Communication satellites on the other hand are in a geostationary orbit, and they are at a height of 35 768km (22 236 miles). I know it is a technicality, but I have worked a lot with GPS systems, and it became a sore point to me to see how many people thought that GPS satellites were in a geostationary orbit, and of course, if you try to explain to people the why and why not's with GPS's, it clarifies a lot of confusion when they realize that GPS satellites are NOT in a geosyncronous orbit.

I live in Wiesbaden, just outside Frankfurt, and also heard this on Wednesday morning. My first thought was a sonic boom, as it rattled the windows and actually made the curtains move as the air was displaced. The following link (in German) was in the local paper the next day. www.wiesbadener-kurier.de...
