It’s been a long time since a concept car has really sparked the imagination of tech geeks and car enthusiasts alike. When Toyota unveiled their latest concept car, the Fun-Vii, at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show this week, everyone from Automobile Magazine to Mashable jumped in to discuss its proposed paradigm-shifting features.

It’s clear what the “Fun” part of the name means just by watching the second video below. The “Vii” stands for Vehicle, Interactive, Internet. Inside and out, most aspects of the car can interact with the internet and be controlled by a smartphone. Most surfaces on and within the vehicle are giant touchscreens that can be adjusted to the whims of the driver, including color changes, graphics, and interactive surfaces.

Kind of surreal, but is this the future of automobiles? It seems like it could be real at some point, and surely be appealing to many. I dig these fantasy visualizations of the future but I always get tangled in the reality of breaking away from petro-propulsion. I guess it is nice to dream and important to visualize such exotic technologies. The Japanese are always at the cutting edge of these type of tech advances. I guess they are less fettered with competing industries that so often squash these type of innovations because of their threat to dominant industries.
As a fan of sci-fi, these things excite me and tickle my optimism about our future, in a novel way. Oh well, enjoy the peek now, because we may never here of this again.

Peace,

That's a really pimped out concept, I admit.

But I do have one major problem with the virtual race aspect shown in the video. It said "You Win!" although the other car was clearly ahead of them and beat them in the race. That part is kind of lame, "You Lost!" is more accurate.

Also I don't like the steering wheel concept. I prefer a 360 degree wheel to give full control of mobility.

Other than that it looks great.
When can I have one? Please don't say in 30 years because that would be ultra-lame.

Also to make this concept viable we need to eliminate tyrannical governments and elitism. Because having a homing beacon like this will only make it super easy for them to track you down for whatever stupid reason a tyrant can cook up.

Plus it could be really easy to spy on the occupants unless we deal with these issues and I sure as hell don't want someone hacking and hijacking my ride while I am in it.

These issues must be resolved in addition to other issues in order for such concepts to become conducive to living free and unhindered safely.

Now muzzle, you know anonymity is so 20th centruy!

What I see happening is companies utilizing this for advertisements, and they would probably offer the drivers some money so instead of some cool graphics we will see Taco Bell and AT&T ads everywhere.
360 degrees would be cool, and yea, I don't know if we will see this soon because as we mentioned, threatened petro industries.
Welcome to the new touchscreen universe.

True, because Taco Bell will win the "restaurant / franchise wars".

All of this totally reminds me of Demolition Man....are we going to sing commercial jingles in the future too?

Enjoy-joy the three sea shells?

You mean in addition to a one world gov we have to worry about a one world restaurant too?!?!

Sounds about right, who else could afford to feed the masses with questionable cheap ingredients?
Kind of reminds me of the Idiocracy movie too.

I just thought about something else, what is the most googled subject? Porn, and can you imagine drivers playing porn on their touchscreen vehicles? Surely there will be safeguards as to what can be presented on ones car, otherwise there could be chaos.
Judge: What do you mean you could not help hitting the other car from behind?
Driver: No, I could not help from hitting the other car in the behind!
