Reference the Russian warships..i am questioning the reason they were deployed. To be honest I dont think it has anything to do with whats going on in Syria and more to do with Russian elections. Putin is running for President, again, and he has been circling the wagons. He has spent the last decade consolidating power and part of me wonders if the recent military moves by Russia are more related to that consolidation of power and less about whats going on in the Middle East.

Putin has managed to get a lot of his rivals / big business owners who dont agree with him thrown in jail for one reason or another. He has slowly rolled back freedoms and as we are starting to see Russians aren't quite so sure anymore about Putin and his ambitions.

Russia's latest external maneuvers might be more geared towards distracting the Russian population during the elections than it is to challenge the west.

As far as Syria and the Scud B nothing new there either. If push comes to shove between Syria and the west / Israel I cant see Syria winning. What I can see is them trying to do as much damage as possible before their end.

Huh? So nuking them after they already bomb their own country with chemical weapons is the sensible thing to do?

They won't bomb their own country with chemical weapons. They will bomb Turkey or Israel.

And I call BS on Syria having anything that goes through NBC suits. I want proof.

Nuking a country to prevent a humanitarian crisis would certainly be a one-up on Libya wouldn't it?

With rumours of Russian warships already there with new weapons things are heating up for one intense stare down.

Who's gonna blink first?

Nobody is blinking. The Russian warships were never there in the first place. It shows you how rumour can get out of hand in the conspiracy world.

The Russian frigate Ladny is scheduled to enter the Mediterranean shortly.

en.rian.ru...

It will make port of calls in NATO and other ports in the Mediterranean.

The Russian aircraft carrier battle group from the Northern Fleet will join the Ladny in the Mediterranean probably in the early part of 2012. A routine scheduled deployment that has been in the planning for a long time.

Of course watch the forum and conspiracy websites go into meltdown when the Russian aircraft carrier actually enters the Mediterranean.

They were never there in the first place. It started with the Syrian news agency claiming that they were coming. Why would Syria want to imply that Russia was coming to assist? Once the conspiracy websites, blogs and forums got hold of it it went ballistic and took on a life of its own. The only Russian warship in the Mediterranean at the time was the Smetlivy that had been exercising with NATO assets.

The story of Russian warships in or off Syria was completely bogus. Admiral Valentin Selivanov has revealed.

"In Tartus now there aren't any our ships. There is only our floating workshop and storage platform. A month ago also there came the Black Sea Fleet patrol ship "Smetlivy", but she has already returned to Sevastopol.

www.stringer.ru...

The Smetlivy was exercising with NATO assets along with the rescue ship Epron. The Smetlivy was at the time the only Russian warship in the Mediterranean. Admiral Selivanov revealed that she has already returned to Sevastapol in the Black Sea.

rusnavy.com...

The replacement for the Severomorsk for anti-piracy patrols came from the Pacific Fleet.

Prior to the Smetlivy exercising with NATO assets the only other Russian warship in the Med was the Severomorsk back in September.

rusnavy.com...

As per usual the conspiracy press such as Debka took the Syrian news agency report as truth and it escalated from there.

As already posted the next genuine Russian warship to enter the Mediterranean is going to be the frigate Ladny. The Ladny will make ports of call in NATO ports and other friendly nations such as Cyprus.

The Russians Navy have announced their training schedule with NATO. See following for list of joint training exercises.

rusnavy.com...

In training year, Russian Navy plans to participate in a number of joint naval exercises including those with navies of the US, Great Britain, and France, reports RIA Novosti referring to a spokesman for defense ministry.

"Russian warships and submarines are deployed worldwide within task groups and singly. It is planned that Russian warships would take part in the FRUKUS 2012 maneuvers, NATO exercises BALTOPS 2012, IONIEX 2012, and the international search-and-rescue exercise Bold Monarch 2012, Russian-Norwegian exercise Pomor 2012, international exercise Northern Eagle 2012, and the RIMPAC 2012 exercise", said the interviewee.

According to him, in 2012 Black Sea Fleet will take part in activation of BLACKSEAFOR task group. Terms and dates of exercises are being currently agreed via diplomatic channels. In addition, Russian warships are supposed to pay visits to over 40 foreign ports in 2012.

Situation normal as these joint training exercises and port of call visits have been going on for years. It is only the die hard doom and gloom mongers that whip up conspiracy stories around such routine deployments.

Totally right... Scuds are old technology, totally crappy. That's what Saddam had.

They are not to be feared... unless they are filled with biological and chemical weapons... and even then, it won't do any good against an army prepared to fight such a war like the Israeli army...

Any weapon is to be feared - a stone can kill you, a Scud with a 750kg high explosive warhead can kill a lot of people.

Being obsolete doesn't stop weapons killing people.

The only way to be ``effective`` with these kind of weapons is to use on civilians... but if Syria does that, they'll get nuked.

Effectiveness depends on what yor aims are, which may or may not be what you aim at!

If the aim is to provike a strike from Israel that results in a wider war then Scuds can be extremely effective.

So please Syria, stop your crap, nobody is scared.

On the contrary - lots of people are scared - Scuds might not be able ot hit what they are aimed at - but it makes no difference whether you are aimed at or not if you are where it lands!!

And the political downstream of the situation which is such that Scuids get used in teh first place - it automatically means moer instability in the Mid-east, which invariably means more people getting killed.

People in the area have a right to be scared!

Being the US is a Representative Republic and not a Democracy, you might be waiting for a long time. While waiting feel free to keep an eye on Russian elections.

What a load of nonsense - a representative republic is one form of democracy - it is a representative democracy where you elect representatives - being a Republic means the people have direct say in selecting the Government as opposed to an oligarchy, aristocracy or Monarchy - where other groups select the Govt.

A constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament such as the UK is also a representative democracy - but obviously it is not a republic.

The USA is nowhere near being fascist - insofar as corporate money powers the political machine it is a Corporatocracy
