for p2p, I reccomend SHAREAZA, it beats Kazaa by a long shot. Kazaa has a huge user base but it's ridden with spyware, trojans and what not.....so far, Shareaza has been excellent. And, as a part of the Gnutella network, it's user base is nothing to complain about. I find everything that I search for.

I won't bother repeating the progs that have already been listed. Some very cool ones.

For those who are still using Kazaa or Limewire, you should check out Ares. Get Ares lite version. No ads, no spyware, faster, instant connection, and so on. Hate to sound like a commercial, but "If you like Limewire, you'll love Ares", and you should be aware that Limewire bundles sypware with it. Google for limeshop and you'll see what I mean. Not easy to get rid of either. Uninstall Limewire and Limeshop will still stay on your system. Uninstall Limeshop1 and it automatically installs Limewire0, and back and forth.

SnatchIt - Gets screencaps from video, which normal screen cap (Alt+PrintScreen) can't do. Make thumbnails, capture images for wallpapers, artwork, editing, etc

Adobe Imageready - Especially for making animated gifs (like avatars, smilies, etc)

Download Accelerator - Download management and optimization.

Giant - Antispyware and security management. Better than Spybot...believe it or not.

Bitlord - Torrent client. Very user-friendly and FAST.

Security Task Manager - Like the task manager (ctr-alt-del) in Windows, but actually tells you what all the thingies do, and assesses their risk as spyware, virus or adware. If you're not confident that your antivirus/spyware is picking everything up, you need this.

And of course Macromedia Flash for 2D animation.

Some of the progs I mentioned/linked to are not freeware/shareware, but if you get Ares and/or Bitlord, you might just be able to figure something out.

Ares has spy/adware too....notably, the homepage hijacker NavExcel.
It's also a huge memory drain and messes with your internet settings.

Bad, bad program. But it's your computer. *shrugs*

ARRRRGHH~~~! Why didn't you tell me earlier?

Seriously, thanks for the heads-up.
It's getting to the stage you can't install anything these days. Guess that's what I get using p2p and not paying for stuff. Karma. :bnghd:

I won't repeat all the great computer programs already mentioned in previous posts. Here's my addition.

VMware - This is a virtual machine to run multiple OS on the same computar. Incidentally a good way to protect against spywares and trojans, you do your p2p downloading etc.. and then you scrap the system and load a new one.
Vserver - Another virtual machine but that one for running multiple servers under Linux. You give a virtual root account to somebody, this way if he screw things up it doesn't affect other root accounts.
SELinux - That's a nice kernel patch for Linux developed by the NSA to boost the system security. It prevent the multiple users on the same computar from tampering each other accounts.
FreeS/WAN - A free tool to create encrypted tunnels across the intarnets and preventing the bad guys from eavesdropping your private data.

EasyRecovery - Life saving tool to recover the precious data you lost on a corrupted or formated hard drive.
PartitionMagic - Fun and easy tool to create or resize partitions on your hard drive.

Microsoft MapPoint - A simple map tool, similar to Google Maps, but useful for an offline laptop in your car with a GPS to find your way around.
GpsDrive - A free map tool for Linux, but that one is a pain to compile, you need a lot of free time to make things work.
Google Earth - Well, do I need to say more?

Sound Forge - An audio editing tool, you can cut & paste sounds here and there. Then you can use the dwav2mp3 tool that convert wav files to mp3.
Ulead VideoStudio - A video editing tool to cut & paste movies.
Dragon AudioMining - A tool by ScanSoft to search keywords in audio and video files. This company also made OmniPage that grab the text from an image or a paper you scanned.

Camtasia Recorder - Tool for video capturing your screen, useful for documenting complex tasks on your computar then emailing the movie file to coworker or friends.
Macro Magic - This tool records your key press and mouse movement, useful for automating boring and repetitive tasks, just sit back and go watch porn or play games while your computar is doing all the work.

America's Army - An incredibly realistic first person shooter game developed by the U.S. Army. And it's FREE!! You play online in teamwork to accomplish missions in urban or wild environments. After passing Special Force training with success you can modify your M4A1 weapon to your likeing and you're all set to kick some butt. Hours of fun! (Unfortunately they screwed the latest 2.5 patch a bit, it introduced a bunch of lag. Either that or maybe I need to upgrade my computar.)
Battlefield 2 - Fun war game. More vehicules and gizmos, but not as much realistic gameplay. This game is a toy for kids. I still prefer America's Army.

Overall security and protection:

TrendMicro Internet Security *2006 just released
(antivirus, firewall, spam, spyware, wi-fi intrusion detection)

MS(Giant) AntiSpyware

Spybot

Using this combo there is virtually nothing a few scans and restarts won't fix.

byte for byte the best protection -vs - system resource usage available. For that matter $ for $ too.

ImageEditing:
Photoshop (of course)
PhotoImpact11 (for those on a budget)

I think little can be added to these lists. Just like to mention that there's nothing wrong with Symantec Corp. Antivirus. As long as you stay up to date with definitions!!!

Then Macromedia Dreamweaver is a... hehehe... dream! Excellent development program.

Nothing wrong with DVD-Clone/Cd-Clone.

FlashFXP for your FTP needs.

And I'm happy enough with Etcetera 2.0 as pop-up blocker.

And can people please explain to me what they see in Winamp? It's awful! Especially in terms of user-friendliness.
